Got our letter from gc in Ohio, 218. I know son must take SAT in the fall of 09 to "verify" that score was not a fluke. So if he takes it and does better, does the better score take him on to Finalists or is PSAT the only one that counts? BTW, just got a 36 on ACT, thank you very much!!

The only test that counts toward National Merit is the PSAT. Congrats on the perfect ACT! If your future SAT scores are not as good as the ACT, you might want to consider sending only the ACT scores to the colleges you apply to if those schools will accept one or the other.

Well, not actually true to get to finalist status. You have to show a comparable score on the SAT (whatever that means).

I was right.....the PSAT is the qualifier score. You take it again to go for finalist status and for the money. This is done to make sure PSAT scores are not just a great guesser's score.

Correct, the PSAT is the qualifier score. You then advance to semi-finalist status on a state-by-state basis- each state will have a minimum score that represents a certain percentage of their top scorers. Once you are a designated semi-finalist, there is a whole long list of requirements to advance to finalist status. The link below might be helpful.

Are you two attending the same school?

No big surprise here... my D2 hasn't received her letter from school, either. This is the same school that had no idea they were supposed to give students their PSAT score reports.

What a bunch of incompetent idiots - and these are the same people who are responsible for submitting transcripts and recommendations for college applications. The students have to babysit them every step of the way, or risk problems with missing application materials and/or deadlines... High school can't be over soon enough for our family! UGGHH!!!

I thought the PSAT was taken by sophomores & the SAT &/or ACT by juniors &/or seniors. Bu, it seems most of you are juniors or seniors. Can someone please clarify who is eligible to be a scholar --- sophmore PSAT takers or only jr's & sr's? Thanks!

Speaking of National Merit, have any of the Finalist's from last year gotten information on specific college scholarships? I believe they were supposed to be mailed out today.

Edit: and I think only to Junior score goes for qualifying. I took it Sophomore and Junior year, and got higher than the cutoff for both years, and only after my junior attempt did I get semifinalist.

Only the junior year PSAT is used to determine who is a scholar. Current juniors are now receiving letters telling them that they will either be commended or semi-finalists. Those that are later told they are semi-finalists have to meet some additional requirements to become finalists, and about 15,000 out of the 16,000 semi-finalists do so. The PSAT is not taken in the senior year. Rather, most students will take the SAT in the spring of the junior year, and again in the fall of senior year, if needed. It is my understanding that a much lower SAT score is one of the things that might result in somebody not becoming a finalist, but I have also heard that most of those who don't make it are those who don't turn in the application.

jmw123, all last year's finalists shall know by now about any NMF scholarships from the colleges' they apply to. In fact, they have to decide where to go to school by May 1.
