Superscoring on the SAT (and ACT?)

My daughter got 800 on SAT critical reading the first time she took it, and so doesn't want to re-take it as she fears her score will drop.
She needs to retake it, she definitely needs to study for the math to improve in math, as well as to retake the writing.

I told her that colleges super-score her SAT test results, such that they look at her top scores in each of the 3 areas. Thus, retaking it won't jeopardize her reading score, but instead will only help--if she does in fact improve in writing or math.

Isn't superscoring being done at most or all unversities these days? I thought I read that somewhere.

Does anyone know about this?

No no no. This topic is always on CC. Most colleges today superscore the SAT. Yes I said most. This includes the top schools. Most people will say that retaking the SAT for the 2nd time cannot and will not hurt you. Congratulations on her 800 on critical reading! That's quite an accomplishment. I'm really jealous =P.

The following schools have been said to superscore the ACT:
Columbia University
New York University
Kenyon College
Macalester College (maybe?)
The University of Chicago (maybe?)

leave your daughter alone; she is old enough to decide for herself.

Simple enough to check the schools you are interested in to see if they super score. Many top places do.

Most schools superscore. Some (notably the UCs and Northwestern) do not. Typically they look at the highest single sitting. Admissions offices will explain their policies if asked directly. If your daughter has concerns a call to her target schools might ease her mind. She's to be congratulated on her 800. I would think chances are very good that she'll do well the second time around on CR.

You could be write about Northwestern--I don't know for sure. There are quite a few posts on CC that say they don't, but I just came across one that claimed someone in admissions said they did superscore. It's probably a good idea to ask target schools directly rather than relying on hearsay.

Northwestern is having info sessions all over the place soon.

Northwestern Comes to You, Office of Undergraduate Admission - Northwestern University

Ask. More generally, ask at the info session of any college

How to Meet College Admission Officers in Spring 2008

that is of interest to you about college policies that you think are important. Or write to the college directly (this is a great time of year for that) if the college isn't coming to your town.

I know Northwestern does not superscore ACT in their published stats (you can figure this out by looking at their common data set). But I am not sure if they superscore when they compare applicants.
