# of times taking SAT

basically i heard that taking the SAT 3 times is around the maximum without looking to stupid. but since the new test is out.....does that count taking the old test as well? I took the old test once and the new test twice.......will it look ok if i take the new test one more time?

You can take the test AS MANY TIMES AS YOU WANT. There is no such thing as "looking stupid"

that is not entirely true

"Some" colleges will "average" your SATs if u take them more than 3 times.

Ive never heard of anything like that. The only reason they say not to take it more than 3 times is because they dont want you to waste your money. Its been proven that your max score you will ever get is as high as it will ever be after 3 times

Just take it the first time and ace it, a second only if you really f---ed up. Why bother taking it four times? Waste of time and money if you ask me. Just a test, after all...

There's no such "rule" about only taking three SAT tests. It a myth that has been dispelled by many college AdComs. Basically, take the SAT as many times as you feel comfortable with if you think you can significantly improve your score each time. Many people stop after three or four tests because by that time, they're getting consistant scores that are unlikely to change. Even if you take it more than that, colleges only consider your highest SAT score (highest composite or highest in each section, depending on the school). No college is known to average SAT scores. Most likely, the AdComs receive a "sanatized" version of your academic record, only showing your highest SAT and 3 highest SAT II scores - they really dont have time to consider how many times you took the test.

Can anyone cite a valid source supporting the claim that "Some colleges will average your SATs if u take them more than 3 times," or that colleges look down upon such applicants?

I have yet to see a valid evidence.

if its a reasoning test shouldnt it not matter how many times you take it because your reasoning skills wont vastly improve over a 2 month span from the 3rd time you took it the increased score(if it is) should only result from weeding out careless mistakes

after three times you really need to direct your efforts elsewhere, work on your ecs or something. Who is willingly going to put themselves through that hell for a 50 pt increase?

Does it look weird if you take the Sat regular twice, and SAT 2's three times?

Anyone? (the reason is im satisfied with my regular score...but i'm struggling with my SAT 2's)

The same SAT II three times? If you're struggling with your SAT II score, you might try moving to a different subject - colleges will only consider your two/three highest scores. Even if you're not happy with one of your scores, if you have enough other scores that you're happy with, the one "bad" score won't make a difference.

wat i did read/hear tho is tht some adcoms will think ur being too desperate/w.e if u do more than 3 times SAt1. dont rlly have a source, but its just how its always been going on for me. (hell no way illl do more than 3 times neways ...) maybe i read it in katherine cohens book or acing the admission book
