Did anyone else get THAT letter? (Class of 2011)

Today I got a letter in the mail about some College Board thing where they refer you to 2 colleges and how I'm one of the top 50,000 scorers in the nation. Did anyone else get that letter today? I'm assuming that means I'm commended (PSAT 205). Congrats to whoever else got it by the way

[EDIT: Its from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, not the College Board. MY B! :P]

Yeah, I got one from my high school's college counselor just a few days ago. I'm pretty sure it means you are at least commended; my counselor told me he thought I would make semi-finalist (which means I have a chance at finalist!).

215 here; kind of mad because I made a few stupid mistakes that would have brought my score up even higher.

Nice job! Hope we got semi-finalists. ;D

Thanks Unfortunately I can't do as well (percentile-wise) on my SATs . ACTs in September and SATs again in October for me I guess :P.

Yeah...215 here...but from NY, so unlikely to be a semi. I chose Emory & Rice.

i'm right on the border w/ a 215 from illinois...the cutoff was 214 last year, but if it jumps i'm in trouble. does it truly matter where we send the information too?

And great job to everyone!

Do you think being refered to Ivy Leagues by this would really make a difference?

I took PSAT cold, and did horribly. barely got my 1800. I got national achievement commended so far, not merit. *Sigh*

Haha yeah drudy11 I'm pretty much on the border too; like I said I got 215 and the cutoff in the last few years have been like 211-213. Missouri here.

The letter says something about sending the score results to 2 colleges.

Is it a mistake to send it to the Ivies (i.e. do they even care)?

Would it be better to send it to some lower prestige schools to show interest?

I'm not sure about where to send it; I'm talking to my guidance counselor about it tomorrow. I know that some schools (MSU in particular) will give money if you list them top two. I don't know if that's for semi-finalist or just merit scholar in general, but it would be great to receive scholarship money for the psat.

I would assume that most Ivy's/T20 schools don't even pay attention to Commended/NMSF's. I'd guess that easily over 50% of the applicant pool at such schools falls into said category.
