Writing question help

Naomi and Charles will represent Ammonton High in the debating <contest, there work in this having been excellent this year.>
The answer is D: contest, for their work as public speakers has been excellent this year.
Why is it has not have?

The answer is "has" because "their work" is singular (even though "they" is plural) - work is singular.

Also, as it's written, there's a comma splice between "contest" and "*their."
