Unfortunately, yes. Colleges HATE it when students achieve perfect test scores. They usually prefer students who score lower on the SATs and have low GPAs.

Fortunately for you, since you are asking this question, you are not likely to score a 2400.

The ranges for GPA and SAT scores are the middle 50%. Some students have higher and some lower. If you want a match, your GPA and SAT scores should fall into that range or be higher. If your scores are lower, the college is a reach. The schools don't prefer lower stats but, some of the kids may have a hook or be athletes. The college is willing to accept lower stats for someone that will increase their diversity or be an asset in a sport.

I think in the situation you describe, the student (assuming their GPA matches their scores) is more likely to be offered merit aid (if the school offers merit aid) and might be accepted into the school's honors program (again, if the school has one). Schools sometimes offer these perks to attract those students. For these reasons, a student with high scores and GPA might consider that school (perhaps as a safety), but will likely also be applying to schools that look for students with those higher stats.

sarah may be book and test smart, but i think she might be light on the common sense smart, eh? sarah 02134, which is my old zip code, all schools take students at all levels of scores, grades, activity, etc. if you want to apply to a school, apply. otherwise, it's an automatic no.
