So what examples are considered "cliches"? Is "To Kill a Mockingbird" counted as one?

No examples are cliches.
It's just that some are used more frequently than others, and readers get bored of seeing them over and over again. there is no definite line between "reader will love it" and "reader will fall asleep"
Frequent examples:
Galileo, Edison, MLK, Bill Gates. Try Bessemer, Morse, Gandhi (<--though that might be overused) instead

Non cliches...for example, on the January SAT, the topic was about something about people being trustworthy. My examples were the tariff of 1898 and walden by henry David thoreau. You don't hear those every day. Also, I know SAT vocabulary is important, but don't show off with it. Some ppl throw like 12 words in, but I only used 6-7 in my essay. So a lot of words isn't necessary, just write clearly and to the point .

Hey, sorry OP for hijacking, but on a similar note, who's interested in doing BB CR or WR questions? we could do same tests each week and reviewing/helping each other for problems we don't get?

lemme know, send me a PM!
