Prevent making stupid mistakes

We all make them. Any tips/tricks/ideas to lessen the chance in all three subjects of the SAT?

Kind of obvious but it helps me a lot in math underline what the question is asking because most of the time the word problems have a lot of superfluous information that could mess you up.
