grammar question help

Here's the original sentence:

The author, taking the reader on a chronological journey through her native land, skillfully combining history and legend with fragments of fiction.

Here are 2 options:

(C) The reader is taken on a chronological journey through her native land by the author who is skillfully

(E) The author takes the reader on a chronological journey through her native land, skillfully

Here are the reasons:

Choice (C) involves the use of a vague pronoun. It is not clear whether the pronoun "her" refers to the reader or to the author.

I don't see how option C uses a vague pronoun. Doesn't "her" clearly refer to "reader" in this case?

Choice (E) is correct. It avoids the error of the original by providing a verb ("takes") to complete the main clause begun by the subject, "The author."

I thought E uses vague pronoun usage, though. How do you know who "her" refers to in this case?

In fact, I thought C sounded more correct than E and went with it, but the actual answer is E. I'm confused.

Passive voice that is why my friend. Look it up. Try to avoid passive voice & rather active.

Well that's my reason to it & why I would choose E over C.

'C' sounds like the author is referred to as skillful, whereas actually, the 'combining history and legend with fragments of fiction' is referred to as a skillful act of the author. Hope I didn't confuse you!!
