edited May 2008 in SAT Preparation
i took the SATs for the first time in march and i got an 1890 without studying at all,
CR 610
Math 660
Writing 620
Essay 9

this is probably a dumb question, but is this a good score? in terms of getting into a UC.

i know i'm going to take it again in the fall to see if i can get a higher score with studying.
how can i improve my english sections (CR/ writing). math i can figure out some how, i need tips on the cr/w parts.

what is the typical score improvement for a second time test taker? if there's a stat on that...

i also took SAT IIs in math and bio on may 3, which i'm waiting on the scores for those.

also, what are some tips on getting my essay score higher, here's a screencap of the scan of my essay.
input on how to improve it or anything like that would be much appreciated.

use more examples. Your essay received a 9 but it had potential of being atleast an 11. That could've brought your writing score up to bring you to around 660 for writing?

My roommate got into UCLA with an 1800 flat. He also got into Cal, but declined to go there. However, I think its pretty rare to find people with his SAT score with acceptances like these.

That's a pretty good score for not doing any studying. If you do study, I could see that easily becoming at least 2100.

I got into UCLA and Davis with a 2060, and I have very little in the way of community service/ extra-curricular activities. So, if you're pretty involved in that stuff, I'm sure 1890 is fine for the UC system. Which UCs are you interested in anyway?

I think there is one more important factor contributing to the acceptance to UC is your ethnic or nationality. If you are Asian the chance for you is very small because there are great majority of Asians in CA.

Affirmative Action based on race, gender, or ethnicity does not play any role in admissions in the UC system--as stipulated by the California state constitution. Therefore, race would not affect admissions in any way--which probably explains the substantial percentage of Asian-American students enrolled at UCs.

If I remember correctly, about 30% of the student population at UCLA is Asian, while 40-ish% was Asian in the in the incoming class this past year, which isn't exactly evidence that they're trying to bring less Asians in.

Actually, in CA state schools, quotas based on race are not permitted, but race can be considered in admission (UCal Regents v. Bakke).

i'm thinking about UCLA, UCSB, or UCSD.
i'll go almost anywhere that takes me, but those are my top choices as for UCs...

i've also been in student council for 2 years, next year will be my third and final year as a senior rep.
i've been in interact club for two years and have dabbled in a few other clubs.

Quotas can't be used at any (public) university, actually. Bakke was a Supreme Court case.

You should be okay, but retaking it again couldn't hurt. I jumped up 180 points from one test to the next, which was a nice little boost.
