i read cb's explanations,but they're very vague. that's why cbs explanations suck. boooooooo cb!

The correct answer (I think).
(B) Known for its waterfalls and rock formations,
several thousand people a day visit the park
during the summer months.
Wrong because of modifier - "several thousand people" aren't "known for its waterfalls etc.". The park is "known for its waterfalls etc.", so "the park" should be directly after the comma.
(C) Several thousand people a day visit the park
during the summer months known for its
waterfalls and rock formations.
Wrong - run-on sentence, and the subject for "known for its waterfalls etc." is unclear, is it the people or the park or the summer months?
(D) Several thousand people had visited the park
a day, which is known for its waterfalls and
rock formations during the summer months.
Wrong b/c of modifier - "a day" is not "known for its waterfalls etc."
(E) During the summer months, knowing its
waterfalls and rock formations, several thousand
people a day visit the park.
Wrong tense "knowing its waterfalls etc." plus it is really awkward.

The subject is "Chinese watercolors", which should be compared to the watercolors of the American/European artists, NOT the artists themselves.
(B) contemporary American and European artists
The subject is "Chinese watercolors", which should be compared to the watercolors of the American/European artists, NOT the artists themselves.
(C) those by contemporary American and European
artists of the period
Wrong - I don't know the exact grammatical rule being broken here. "...of the period" Of what period? It cannot be of the same period because the Americans/Europeans are contemporaries of the Chinese.
(D) those of American and European pictures of the
same period
Wrong - The original sentence states that American/European artists are their contemporaries, so they are not in the same time period.
(E) those by contemporary American and European
artists
Correct - the subject "those" refers to watercolors. | |

| It can't be D for the second one.
The European and Americans are the Chinese' contemporaries.

1. A person of the present age.
Therefore, they are NOT "of the same period" | |

| it's A and E.
A is more difficult to explain. i never learned any of this stuff in school, it just comes naturally. i dunno, it sounds right.
i can explain the second one though. you can't compare a chinese watercolor to a person. so it has to say those. E is definitely the most clear. the of the period thing is just pointless and confusing. | |
