Would colleges already know who made National Merit Semifinalist?

Would colleges already know who made National Merit Semifinalist for the class of 2011?

I took the PSAT last Saturday, and today, I received a letter from the University of Texas at Dallas congratulating me on being a National Merit Semifinalist. I am very skeptical. How would they even know this early? Does anyone know anything about this?

Yeah this doesn't make any sense... Also you don't hear about if you made semifinalist until next year (officially) but sometimes you can tell by looking at your state cutoff score.
