I put scientific observations for the second question of that passage, but I think it might have been anecdote.

"pulp" meant inferior type of literature

I'm pretty sure it was mellifluous. I think it said something like: because the singer's voice was mellifluous, it didn't show the effort with which she was singing?

I chose "appreciate challenges" for the writer passage too, but I think it's wrong. dunno.
