Are SAT Subject tests meant to be competitive?

I know Some colleges require SAT Subject Tests.
But If you taken one or few SAT Subjects and do pretty well on them and go to a college that does not require SAT Subject Tests;; do colleges look at em or do they even care??
Can it make you more competitive than other applicants?

If your scores are excellent, then yes, they could make a difference. However, there is no point sending in mediocre scores to universities that do not require the subject tests.
