790 in Math IIC

How bad would that be, if I were to apply to schools like MIT/Caltech? I didn't get that..yet. But I was just wondering. Should I retake? Please, don't comment on my OCD...

Since the school's will see all SAT scores, they will see that you felt the need to retake a 790 Math IIC whether you achieve an 800 or not. Will they consider that good (driven) or bad (obsessive)? I would not be encouraging my kid to re-take. If they don't get into any school it will not be due to a 790 math score. In summary - I would say don't retake.

idk. They would probably wanna see 800, but if you get a 790, then dont retake it. They dont want perfectionists either.

I was in the same situation this testing session in June. I decided not to retake because the negatives really just outweighed the positives (chance of lower score or appearing obsessive or too much of a perfectionist). I'm happy I didn't do it because a 790 is still very good.

I have no hope of getting a 790 in Math 2, but I think retaking might make you look obsessive. An single sitting 800 looks excellent, and a single sitting 790 is also excellent - but a 790, and then 800, could make adcoms think you have too much time to prepare for a 10-point increase rather than other more enriching activities.

But, congrats on a fine score.

Random question, but...how would adcoms treat someone who retook an 800, but scored lower? Would it count against them? Would they be rejected for lacking common sense? Or would they just scratch their heads and forget it?

no, MIT and Caltech both reject all 790 or below. Only people with 800 in Math 2 get in. So you definitely should retake.

(just kidding, dont waste money.)

placidia, I'd reject whoever retook an 800. We need to kick social darwinism into gear. Common sense >intelligence

@swoop
nice

lots of admission officers tell people not to retake their test if they score 700+, don't retake it. although.... i feel your pain, 790 is just not an 800....

no..lol..i'm not retaking.
Yesterday night, when I was getting nervous I posted this thread to ask, if I should, if I did get a 790. It was all a hypothetical situation.

It was the "prophecy" thing that was confusing me. Given that today the june scores came out, I thought MS there was a correlation.
