so you guys think putting (0,0) for x-int was wrong? I went for the definition ( x-int is where it crosses the x-axis, with the value of y=0). It totally make sense to me

Did the question explicitly ask for whether it CROSSES?

crosses and intersects are two different things.... i think it said "..will intersect the x-axis when..."

ok so the question is whether it says intersects or crosses

in the discussion in the first couple pages, I think most ppl used the word "intersect". Was it intersect?

also does anyone remember what the question for this "167.6" was?

Intersecting means having common point(s). That is clearly the case at (0, 0).

@nick
so the question asked for "intersect" and NOT crosses?

Yeah, it was definitely intersect, and therefore the answer was k<=0. End of discussion.

I personally remember it as intersect.

It was intersect, but even then, when you graph the equation and find points of intersection between X^2 and y=0, there are none. K<0

If you make x equal to zero, and k=0, then y=0 as well. You would have the line y=0, which is the x-axis, which intersects an infinite amount.

BTW: I graphed it, First Curve: y=x^2, Second Curve: y=0. Used 2nd - Calc - Intersect, found the intersection at (0,0). It intersects. If x=0 k has to be 0 to make y equal to 0.

@nigcruch I did the same but my calc is telling me error: no sign change, how did you get your result?

@andro

actually when u graph x^2 it does intersect

for the first curve, go 1 to the left of the y axis and for the second curve go one to the right of the y axis. For the guess, go to (0, 0). It does show the intersect
