I'm not sure if Barron's covers it, but you should know what colors/odors/state elements and some compounds are. On the last subject test there were about 8 classification questions regarding this! Usually, there are 4-5.
For instance, Chlorine is a gas, Bromine is a liquid, and Iodine is a solid. The reason these halogens are all different states is because of Van der Waal's forces, which increase in strength between nonpolar molecules as the atomic mass increases (chlorine's mass is less than Bromine's, which is less than Iodine's).
Chlorine is a green gas, bromine is a pale-yellow liquid, and iodine is a dark, metallic purple-black solid.
