Try telling people you are going to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy if you think you have trouble with USNA, USMA, or USAFA.....oh man was that ever ridiculous. Or having recruiters call your house into your 2nd class year asking your parents if you would like to enlist.

One guy I know told someone that he had completed the cadet space program over the summer (learn about missiles and satellites). The first question he got was "So you went into space?! COOL!" More understandible, but still funny.

Gentleman (an Army Vet) asked after my son & what he's up to these days. I answer, "He goes to the US Merchant Marine Academy, learning to sail the 'big boats'".

"Oh & where is that?" I answer, "Kings Point". He turns to his wife & said, "Hey! Her son's at West Point!" (I had no idea West Point sailed giant ships too so I was kinda surprised) LOL

I turned to my hubby & silently mouthed, "Who's on first!"

Good thing there are only two "Points". Just think how we would all explain the likes of Annapolis Point, Colorado Point, Coast Guard Point.

When my son got his appt & we first got on this forum, someone on here (shogun? bill?) posted that half the people out there won't know what you're doing, and the other half won't know why you're doing it!

That statement has turned out to be "almost true"! haha!

I love getting the recruiter calls for DS - I love telling them that he's at USNA. Haven't encountered any that didn't know what that meant - yet! Thanks for the heads up - I'd be flabberghasted if a recruiter tried to argue w/ me that they could offer DS a "better deal". Now I have time to think of a snappy comeback!

We have a friend who is at KP. His mom was surprised that dd at USNA was on a MILITARY ship last summer. Um, that's about all they do... His mom STILL doesn't get it... She asked me just yesterday if dd would ever get experience on a container ship???

Have you ever seen the "Jaywalking" segments on The Jay Leno Show? The widespread ignorance of the American public is astounding, and quite frankly pretty depressing. People don't give a s**t about Iraq and the military in general because only one percent of the American population is directly affected by the war (Blackwater, Haliburton, and other government contractors not included). Now the "economy" is the hot political issue. Why can't people connect the dots between the war and the economy?
