The actual town of South Orange is really nice, just always walk left out of the gates of campus. Left is Newark, which is a bad area. As long as you stay to the left, you'll be perfectly fine.
There are muggings a couple times a month, but it usually only happens at nigh when the victim is listening to their iPod and they have their backpack on (hence, they think they have their Seton Hall laptop in it). Just don't go out alone at night. Especially if you're a girl.
