Really want to go to Flo's - does anyone think it matters if we duck out for Smith dorm lunch? We have to leave before dinner.

I just got back from taking my daughter to Smith - she's in her last year and living in an apartment, so we were able to go early and avoid the rush. We ate in a number of great restaurants. For breakfast we love Haymarket and the Green Bean. Veracruz has great Mexican food. We also enjoyed Green Street, Circa, Zen, and Siam Square. We were there 5 days so we had the opportunity to sample a number of places.

We had supper at Carmelinas this evening and all enjoyed our meal. Very good fresh pasta and good local vegetables. They also had live jazz music which was delightful and just right for our last evening with our daughter.

I like the Eastside Grill very much for a more traditional meal, especially a steak. Decent wine, too.
Spoleto's is probably my favorite but India House, Osaka, and Viva Fresh Pasta Company are all good too, the last being very deceptive because of a downstairs dining room you can't see and a menu that has some very very good items on it.

I second Viva Fresh. We received a warm welcome, exceptional food and attentive service when we ate there last Fall.
My husband is in Northampton right now, helping my second-year daughter move in. (As a member of a choral ensemble, she had to arrive early to practice for convocation.) I wish I could be there, sharing a "last supper" with her at any of these places mentioned!

Since we'd seen so many restaurant recommendations on CC, it was hard to choose, but we tried Viva Fresh Pasta (the walnut/portabello ravioli was fabulous) Sunday night and Monday night, before we drove home, we checked out Spoleto. Both of them were absolutely terrific!

Why have I not seen a mention of Green Street Cafe :: Northampton, MA ?
We enjoyed dinners there several times during campus visits. More recently D (an '06 grad) took a prof who had been a mentor to her to dinner there when she revisited campus just this past spring. It is so convenient to campus and the food is good and they grow a lot of their own vegetables and herbs.
Edit: Oh, I now see that at least one poster has mentioned Green Street (post # 17).

Jyber209, thank you for the Green Street Cafe link. It looks like a lovely place! We'll consider it next time we're there.

When I was at Smith back in the day (late 70's), my parents used to take me out to eat at Fitzwilly's for burgers, sandwiches, salads etc. Fitzwilly's is still there and you can find their menu on line. I also saw someone mention Joe's for pizza and it made me smile as that is where my Smithie friends and I used to all go if we wanted to get pizza out somewhere. The pizza was thin crust and a bit on the greasy side but reminded me of the great pizza I got as a kid in the New Haven CT area. Joe's is a bit of a hike from campus and nothing fancy but we enjoyed it nonetheless. In the end, Northampton is full of great dining choices now as it was back then.

How hard is it to get into some of the nicer places over parents weekend? Should we make a reservation in advance? I'm assuming that my D will want a nice meal off campus at some point.

Iirc, some of the restaurants don't ordinarily take reservations. But then they do on graduation weekend. I was always antsy about getting into Spoleto's without having to wait forever but it always worked out.

my favorites are Green Bean or Jake's for breakfast, Haymarket for lunch or coffee, La Veracruzana for Mexican, Paul & Elizabeth's for vegetarian/seafood, Zen or Osaka for Japanese, Teapot for Chinese, Indian House for Indian, Amanouz for falafel/moroccan, Pinocchio's or Luna for pizza.

Looks like we may go out to visit for the day sometime late Sept per D's request (rather than her come home long weekend in Oct) and now I feel overwhelmed with choices of where to take her for dinner
BTW she is having a great time so far.

At that time of year, if you can go to the Montague Night Kitchen, do it. The setting will be sensational!
