Quarter System

Is there a break between each quarter? And do you have a break before "exam period", when final exams are given and final papers are due?

Yes, there's a break between quarters. Winter break (usually three weeks) comes between fall and winter quarters, and spring break comes between winter and spring quarters.

At the end of each quarter, there's a one-week "end-quarter period" (aka Dead Week), which doesn't really mean much. Professors aren't allowed to spring new assignments on you, but they can still give you regular problem sets and all. The following week is finals week. Final papers, by the way, are not necessarily due during finals week; sometimes they're due during dead week.

Also, the whole thing is different in spring quarter due to the need for a few days off before commencement, which is always on a Sunday. Dead week ends on a Wednesday, and there are no classes Thursday. Finals are held Friday, Saturday, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday after that, and you have to move out of the dorms for the summer on Thursday unless you're staying for graduation.
