Math 19 vs Math 41

I've posted about this before but I didn't really get a lot of answers a month ago so here we go again.

I seriously sucked at math in HS but I think this also had to do with having a series of horrendous teachers and basically never studying properly for tests.

I'm not sure if I'm ready for Math 41, but would be willing to take on the challenge (and study correctly this time!) and skip Math 19 and its three quarter sequence to save a quarter and take the faster sequence.

If any currents students could comment on their experiences in one of these classes that would be wonderful.

You technically only have to take one mathematical science class, but you don't need to take calculus to do that.

I have to take at least calculus because I'm thinking of majoring in public policy or MS&E.

You only need one math class but you could need more depending on your major. If you dedicate yourself to studying and doing the work, then Math 41 will be manageable. If you want to save a quarter then you should do it.

Hm. How do we find out which math classes are required for our majors?

Right now I'm not set on one major so should i hold off on taking math until i'm sure?

If you are going to be taking any time of engineering your are going to have to take the 40 series and maybe the 50 series.

You could go to the major's website and they usually have information about what is required and such. If you find your major's "program sheet" like this one, http://cs.stanford.edu/degrees/under...ems_0809PS.pdf, it will tell you what classes you need etc.

The Bulletin should have requirements for each major. For example, for Computer Systems Engineering: Computer Systems Engineering (CSE)

I'm kinda like you, deciding between 2 potential majors. But hopefully, the majors you're considering are in similar areas... so it should be easy to determine the type of math you need for both.

I'm thinking of doing a secondary major in either public policy or economics, so I will need a lot of math, including Math 51.

Problem is, I had a terrible math experience in HS and am considering taking the 19/20/21 series.

Would it be advisable for me to instead do the 41/42 series and get an easier curve in the Math 51 class by taking it in the spring, or do I stick with the three-quarter series and take 51 autumn quarter my sophomore year (thus competing with the 2014s on the curve?)

Math 41 is cake. Easy A. One of the easiest math class at Stanford. Well of course besides Math 19/20/1 and Stats 60 and Physics 41
