Would taking the SAT 4 times look bad, as if I'm obsessing over the test?

I've heard three is the recommended amount unless you are actually making big gains each time you take it. But I am not really too sure.

Attempt to limit your takings to three, unless an improvement is an absolute necessity to bolster your candidacy. It doesn't matter for colleges that accept Score Choice. (Stanford isn't one of them, unfortunately.)
