Anyone doing IB here and applying to Stanford?

I'm doing IB! List your subject and your predicted or current grades

Math HL - 6
IndonesianB HL - 7
Geography HL - 6

English A1 SL - 4
Business SL - 6
Physics SL - 3 (Ewww!!!)

Based on these results, i'm not so sure of my chances to stanford. I've got pretty strong recs, good list of ECs and awards, solid grades in freshman and sophomore yr (all As except for 1B in each year). Taken SAT in oct, but haven't found out scores yet. Please asses chances?

    you IB DP?

    math hl - 7
    physics hl - 7
    chem hl - 7

    hist sl - do'nt know
    English a1 sl - 7
    chinese b sl - 7

your HLs are good. IB HLs are looked upon as uni material. It's that 3 that will kind of nail you....as an sl subject, it's not supposed to be difficult (little do they know...geez).

I think it will hurt, but won't kill you.

Wow your scores are unbelievably... i don't know i'm speechless i guess hahaa... but i took physics HL for the past year, the teacher was unbelievably crap and i dont knwo if i should get that across to the admissions officers through the application. I got As in the previous years before she came to 'kill' our physics class

i'm doing IB diploma too. I have a question though: how do you guys you know your test scores before you actually take them??

here's what i have so far:
    Physics SL: 6
    Economics SL: 7

and these are for this year:
    spanish SL
    math HL
    comp sci HL
    english HL

but i've also taken like six or seven AP tests so far

    Last year:
Physics SL: 6 (yeah, and I'm a physics major, too...the thing is, our teacher didn't get to electricity and magnetism until the week before the test, and I spent spring break in france instead of studying for it :) will my 800 on the SAT II make up for it?)
Math Studies SL: 7 (yeah, easy, but that's my school for you. AP Calc this year, and god do I love it.)

    This year:
    French SL
    Biology HL
    History of the Americas HL
    English HL

(my IB program's new--we're the second graduating class--so these are the only HL's offered. makes it easier for me; I wouldn't have been able to pick HL's otherwise)

Mmm, I have a question. How're your guys' CAS programs? We've got all sorts of restrictions--you can only get 35 hours per project, max of 5 hours per day (or 1 hour if it's a sports practice), etc. etc., which means that I have to fill out a BAJILLION of forms (because I have to have 6 projects at LEAST--2 in each category--for the full 150 hours). Are your schools anything like that?

    IB Math HL - 6
    IB Physics HL - 7
    IB Economics HL -7
    IB English A1 SL - 7
    IB Spanish A2 SL - 6
IB Computer Science SL - 7
    TOK + EE - 2

Sometimes I feel like the IB has been a waste because I won't get any credit for it at some universities, Stanford included...

oh my god, i've lost all hope........... ughhhh my scores are ugly :(
  • yz16yz16 Posts: 280Registered User Junior Member
run4fun - you mean it's not appreciated at stanford? or do you mean, they don't give you credit for it?

paul - no, no : ) those are my predicted grades based on mock exams, administered jsut like the real thing, except it only covers the stuff we'd done to that point.

entropic - happens at my school too, but maybe not to such a great extent.....

^ oh really? well we don't do practice test until like two months before the actual tests dates. BTW, do universities care about predicted grade?

does stanford even have to see your bad scores? Do they see your predicted scores? If you live in U.S. I mean. . .I'd imagine it would be more important if you were an international.

    I'm IB D as well. . .
Taking English HL, Math HL, History HL, and Chemistry SL this year. Not sure what my scores would be, but I'm capable of a 7 in all the HLs and probably a 5 in Chemistry.

Last year: Spanish B SL: 5, Latin SL: 4 (ugh, but it was extremely hard. Ah well).

What are your transcripts like for junior and senior year? Do they put down your IB grades marked according to IB standards in the junior year and senior year so far, or do they just put down your predicted grades and not put any scores for junior and senior yr?
  • yz16yz16 Posts: 280Registered User Junior Member
paul - UK unis care a whole lot. US unis, not really, but (in answer to tenniscraze's q) in school we get marked by IB standard, and a comment's made on the transcript.

Sucks sometimes, because some teachers think 'oh, IB standard, well, I can't be giving any 7s in the 1st year of a 2 year course can I?'.

yz16- Stanford certainly appreciates them, but from what I have heard from my neighbor who goes there and did IB, they don't give any credit.

My predicted grades are from my teachers (who submit them to my college counselor early senior year...and I have a feeling these are just based on term grades).

We also get marked by IB standard, but those who deserve a 7 certainly get one.

We don't take Mocks until about 2 months before the exam either.

And whoever said they could "probably get a 7 in their HL's" then said that they expected a 5 in SL Chem and got 4's in other SL exams...what are you smoking? The definition of a HL is that it is harder than a SL...obvioulsy they are different classes, but Math HL is the Death Higher...don't expect a 7. English HL is the fake HL, and History is pretty easy from what I've heard so I might believe you on that one.

Math HL is ridiculously hard. You need like 97%+ accuracy to get a 7, so I can pretty much forget about that (or so i've heard)
  • yz16yz16 Posts: 280Registered User Junior Member
a lot of people at my school apply to the UK which requires predicted grades, which might explain why we have early-early mock exams (and then one or two sets of mocks again before the real thing.

run4fun- math HL seems ok, can't say about english HL, but history HL is *hard*, i thought. Anyway, it's all subjective, so : ).

math HL is generally all right but it's easier when you've already taken IGCSE additional math (international version of the british GCSE exam)... i don't know what i can do with my level 3 in physics, it's just yukky and that's coz the teacher sucks so much!!!!
