| dukebluedevils is being quite harsh. she's not saying that she deserves it more than others, she is simply stating how she got into stanford. the question is, why do you think that she doesn't deserve it? you probably got rejected from stanford and are bitter about it. |

| I think she would actually deserve it more than the other 20,000 if she was able to be admitted without playing to the colleges' interests and doing worthless EC's and all that. And it isn't like Stanford is the perfect place for everyone, I'm sure that the OP could be equally as happy and/or successful at UCSD. Stanford is a great option to have, and I'm sure OP made a great choice, but it isn't like it as obvious of a decision... Idk, if dukebluedevils is at stanford I wouldn't want to go there. Not that I could, since I got rejected... |

| Lilly, congrats on your decision, and don't worry, you're safe-- duke is going to cal, so you won't have to deal with him |

| why do you guys feel you have to defend every single sap story on cc? i've got a news flash for you, that's not how it works in the real world and ignorance is not considered a redeeming quality. i'm not trying to be overly insensitive and if you actually knew me in real life instead of just on a internet forum, you'd realize i'm actually a very friendly person. idk maybe the fact that i did get rejected from stanford, my dream school, does make me bitter and if so i apologize for that. however, i just can't fathom the fact that someone can get into stanford without knowing anything about it. again, i apologize for my aggressive tone, i'll admit that's definitely due to my bitterness about stanford and don't take it personally. | that's not entirely true since we're right across the bay from one another and are rival schools. also the big game is at cal this year so get ready to be dominated. GO BEARS! |

| whoa whoa I feel some sort of elitism emanating iamtooperfect and applesauce... so what if bluedevils's rejected from stanford... and applesauce deciding where to go to college based on some random post on internet forum is indeed very good decision making (even when you have to dig some users post history to know that)... man
well BlueDevils, I kinda feel for you. Admissions to college is so random these days, sometimes people who're really passionate about their dream school get rejected and while people who're clueless get accepted. But that's life man.. it was, is and never will be fair. hope you're enjoying berkeley. Don't be too bitter about rejection. |

| who cares that USNWR ranks Stanford above UCSD. The rank is done by ALL majors not just comparing the medical programs. The medical program at UCSD is outstanding and very well known and prestigious. I have no ties to UCSD I'm just stating a fact that I know from articles I have read and if you notice magazine articles that quote research programs UCSD is always mentioned.
UCSD is a public school and Stanford is private. Private schools are usually ranked higher than public schools. |

| So what if people who are "clueless" about the schools get in and those who are passionate about their dream school don't? There's a grander number of kids who are clueless and get rejected, and those who are passionate and get in.
C'mon, bluedevil. I know you are bitter, but that is no excuse to vent your frustrations on a forum. And please do not pontificate your views on how "the world works." You have no more experience than do we. In fact, this "real world," I believe-or at least hope-works on more or less a system of merit. Qualifications are more important than how much you want it. Just because I want the Nobel prize and have been dreaming about it since I was 5 does not make me eligible to obtain it. That is life. |

| ^wow great example, i didn't realize you had to be qualified to receive a nobel prize. oh and really, you're saying you only get as much as you earn...i thought everything was just handed to you on a silver platter. thanks for enlightening me...not. i wouldn't get your hopes up for that nobel prize. |

| And I wouldn't get my hopes up about being happy in college if I were you. Guess what? You're a douche, and no one will like you.
Edit: I'll probably get kicked off this forum for that, but it was worth it. |

| ^i guess it's just human nature to sympathize with people; however, unlike most people i don't feel sorry for someone who is ignorant/stupid. i don't care how sad their story is/what excuses they give.
edit: and don't go taking that out of context either.

| listen people just step back for a minute and look at what you're defending:
accepted by stanford->assumed intelligence (i hope)
assumed intelligence->culturally literate
culturally literate->stanford is #4 school in the nation
it just doesn't make sense. seriously my 5 year old brother knows stanford is a prestigious school. |

| I don't know as much about Stanford's bio, but UCSD's is supposedly among the nation's best. And most people are well aware of that. I know Stanford's probably is too, I'm just saying that in bio particularly, the old "Stanford is god" rule doesn't apply quite as strongly against UCSD, because they're probably on (or closer to) even footing. Supposedly, UCSD is #1 in neurobiology...I'm just saying...
Anyways, they're both great schools. What is more important is whether you'll actually want to go there. Keep in mind, Stanford is in the middle of Palo Alto. There's absolutely nothing going on, and it's difficult to get to SF if you're going insane from boredom. Granted, there's a lot of activities on campus, but you're just not going to have the kind of social life you might have at somewhere like UCLA, Berkeley, etc. I applied to Stanford, and didn't get in of course, but having visited both Berkeley and Stanford numerous times, I definitely would not have chosen Stanford over Berkeley anyway. Berkeley's campus and atmosphere is busy, loud, fast-paced, and exciting; Stanford's is laid-back, quiet, slow, and kind of boring. I'm from Santa Cruz, so I welcome the change of pace that Berkeley would provide. You just need to find what you want in campus life.
One more thing: I would take the responses (including mine) on here with a grain of salt, though. Everyone seems to want something different out of college. Most people on these boards are mad geniuses, so are going to screech "Stanford!" after oogling at the latest issue of US News. I'm somewhat of a mad genius too, but I've also put a lot of consideration into college as an experience rather than a career move, because I want to enjoy it. The other extreme is the partiers, who are only in it for the fun (you probably aren't one, considering you're choosing between Stanford and UCSD). So you should think about that when making your decision too- what your motivation is, and how that relates to your choice.
Best of luck. |
