For my daughter:

SAT: 2210
SAT II: 2140
ACT: 34
GPA: 4.0 UW/4.8W
Rank: 1:700
ECs: Tons of music --> talent, leadership, and state-level awards
Hook: Legacy
Result: Deferred EA and Rejected RD

Don't ever let anyone tell you that Legacy is a huge boost or a legacy kid with good stats is a sure thing.

i figure i keep saying "ill post my stats later" on all my posts, so here goes.

Objective:
  • SAT I (breakdown): 2380 (780 crit)
  • ACT:
  • SAT II: 800 mathII 800 chem 740 lit
  • Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4
  • Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 1 or 2
  • AP (place score in parenthesis): 4 us history, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5 on comp sci, world hist, calc bc, enviro (self study), stat.
  • IB (place score in parenthesis):
  • Senior Year Course Load: pretty rough but not insane
  • Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): AIME (i got a 7)
Subjective:
  • Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): ok here goes. i wrote 2 novels for nanowrimo.com (an awesome site). i'm decent at debate (nothing special). i made a few games, and i did an internship where i did some neat programming involving biology. i play piano (ho hum). joined Mathcamp last year, it was awesome as well.
  • Job/Work Experience: see above?
  • Volunteer/Community service: a little tutoring here and there
  • Summer Activities: Mathcamp, internship
  • Essays: AWESOME. definitely my best essays for any college (since i wrote them last, so i was in swing), except maybe mit (where i got denied :P). they attacked the question in clever ways.
  • Teacher Recommendation: i dont think they were that special.
  • Counselor Rec: definitely not too great.
  • Additional Rec:
  • Interview: stanford does interviews? lol
Other
  • State (if domestic applicant): MD
  • Country (if international applicant):
  • School Type: small, lol, last year i dont think it had a single person going to an ivy league.
  • Ethnicity: white
  • Gender: male
  • Income Bracket:
  • Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): ?? being generally awesome
Reflection
  • Strengths:
  • Weaknesses:
  • Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: TOTAL LUCK. The apps I thought were my best were rejected (MIT, Princeton). My worst apps were accepted (harvard??). This one was pretty decent, but it doesn't stop me from thinking that above a certain level applications are a crapshoot indeed.

General Comments: Like I said, as disheartening as a rejection mail is, the process really seems random. It's trite, but don't take the email personally.

Other
  • State (if domestic applicant): NC
  • Country (if international applicant):
  • School Type: Public
  • Ethnicity: White
  • Gender: Male
  • Income Bracket: Around $100,000
  • Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):

My Grandparents taught and met there. My mom went to grad school there.

Reflection
  • Strengths: Common app essay was good; Additional information section was useful as opposed to throwaway; same goes for optional update
  • Weaknesses: 3 Stanford specific essays generic, 2/3 official recommendations were mediocre
  • Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected:

Honestly, after looking at how much harsher they were on early action people, my guess is they thought they would be able to admit much fewer people than they actually were able to and then had to backtrack and admit more (including deferrals such as myself!).

General Comments:

Now the Stanford-Duke decision begins.

S was waitlisted and we are in shock (the good kind) because no one is ever accepted from his Southeastern US school.

Basic stats: 2280 SAT, 34 ACT, 3.89, Cauc., no hooks, good leadership, earnest but short essays, teacher recs were described as "love letters," 6 APS with average of 5.

S really expected to be rejected and is simply thrilled to be on Stanford's waiting list. Congrats to those accepted and cheers to everyone -- I know you will all end up in a terrific place.

REJECTED

My D was rejected.

Rank: 12/212
ACT: 31
GPA: 3.8

She's good with it though. Just like all the others that were rejected, she has several other schools to choose from. Will most likely be attending Washington University in St. Louis since they gave her pretty good scholarship and aid.

Best of luck to everyone.
