@lunascreatures, she's at UWC Atlantic, but she didn't do grade 10 before starting IB and she was entering when she was 15 instead of the usual 16, so she had to talk to the headmaster or something (if I remember correctly). @windopainting, thanks! I love reading science magazines so that's where I got the idea. I think that if you live in China, they'll let you apply through the Chinese national committee, and it should be easier, cause UWC's not very well known there, and the language barrier discourages people from applying. I know cause both my parents are from mainland China.

I had a kid at my interviews (LA area) last year who had flown in all the way from Beijing!
Ugh! I didn't want to read this. We are hoping that the UWC USA committee will accept the fact that my son signed an agreement to stay at his state dept paid exchange year in China until the end of the year and NOT require that he fly in to interview in person. He interviewed last year as a sophomore and hopes to reapply this year, even though he is studying in Beijing.

@Apollo6: They should be understanding about that. If he signed an agreement, especially for a state dept funded exchange, he shouldn't be expected to break that. You should ask if you can organize a Skype interview so that he won't miss out on that opportunity of showing his personality.

@fruitloopery: Science magazines? I thought you were referring to the cereal.

@windowpainting16 I was referring to the misuse of scientific language to sound believable, a term coined by new scientist magazine.

(Any spelling errors should be taken with a pinch of sugar and ignored por favor)

A hint on preparing for applications- it's been known of employers/colleges/universities to check their applicant's facebook or social media page just to get an extra insight. Now i'm not sure if UWC does the same thing, but it can't hurt to make sure your fb page is fairly representing you. So warn that one friend who always posts off-colored jokes on your wall about the Muslim and the can opener. (No intended offence to any Muslim's who own can openers)

Also, for recomendations, yes your going to choose a teacher/club advisor/etc. and while this individual has had a great impression of you and should know basically how to represent you on a piece of paper, it doesnt hurt to type up a little "resume" per se- about yourself. There may just be something they didn't know about you which could help. E.g your Physics teacher may just adore your personality, aptitude,the fact that you cured your grandmothers cancer, your speeches are to die for and you juggle executive positions in two extra curric...but did he know you did all that while partnering with the local shelter in saving abandoned strays. Sure you'll have that to put on your applications, but it'll impress your said person even more to write an outstandinglyer reccomendation. Ok so you want to be a bit subtle- maybe pushing a paper 4 ft long in his face isn't going to work...how about casually mentioning it after a slightly related discussion. "Ahh Mr. Blake, I finally understand how Schroedinger's cat is both dead and alive-speaking of cat's being both dead and alive, I found a kitten with a missing eye last week ..wasn't sure if he was going to make it.. just droppped him off at the shelter I volunteer at. Better yet if the person is up to it, schedule a mini-interview with them before they write it- heck tell them you need to practice for your UWC interview. Just try not to come off as being pretentious or overbearing

I have barely any personal information on my Facebook (except my full name) because I just use it to talk to people who I can't see in real life. Do you think that I should personalize my page a little bit more by adding my favorite bands, movies, books, etc. or should I leave it like it is?

Okay guys! Applications are almost out... Who's freaking out? I sure am. I'm super passionate about international affairs and I really want to get into UWC so I've been super anxious and nervous lately. ugh.

ALUMNI... Is there anyone on here that's an alum? Someone who has gone through the process and can tell us more about student life?

@v00jin

Sure, I mean if your application sparks their intrest and they decide "Hey lets google her/him and see what comes up!" only to find a blank page you could imagine their face (not that I have inside information that UWC does search fb, but if they do it only takes a good 7 minutes and could definately help them shortlist a few individuals) . Just keep in mind the scandalous little things that can rear their ugly heads, anything that may be too offensive or such that misrepresents your awesomeness (like for instance liking a KKK fb page or anything equally controversial like some hate group- even if it seems like a harmless joke).

@aherrle1
With anticipation (ok I don't know about the rest of you...but i said that with Rocky Horror in mind ).

Wow. I just realize next time this year some of us might have gotten in. Hope you all keep posted on how your end of application is going through, will def. take the stress off.

@YogurtHamster and @windowpainting16 I have a personal website.. It's where I post short stories I write, blog posts, reviews, and other random things. My name is no where on the sight (except my twitter that is linked to it). I don't think it would be a bad thing for them to take a look at it. Do you know if there's anywhere on the application that I could link it?

I can't remember for certain. If you put it under your extracurriculars they might look at it.

@lindzmm
Maybe you should try and insert it on the website, how about opening a little tab "About" and write a short cute bio, if your not comfortable putting your entire name Ms. Jessica Rabbit, something simply like Jessie could do. Yeah like @windowpainting16 said, you should be able to squeeze it in. One previous application asked for you're interest/things your most proud of and of course, the extra curricular section would ideal.

@windowpainting16
Wait...holla holla holla, you attend a UWC? Or were you an applicant?

Ahhhhh, A salute to the brave one.

Ok, to keep this thread running:

@windowpainting16 that's just me being nerdy :P @YogurtHamster I don't really get your question, but if you mean my top three choices of UWC schools, its Atlantic, Adriatic and Pearson's. Atlantic because I personally know 3 people that are currently there, its just hours away from my family members in the UK and I can get a direct flight from London to Zambia, its got a programme that allows me to do music therapy (a career that I am considering) for community service, it's one of the first IB schools in the world, gives me many opportunities to get outdoors, and on top of all that, I get to live in a castle! (Though I've heard the facilities are old.) Adriatic's my second cause its also relatively close to home, I know people there, its got a great climate, a good music programme (I think I've heard that from somewhere) and my friend in UWC says its a good school. Pearson's my third cause it has an emphasis on nature and outdoors, offers full scholarship, and according to their website and videos, wants people who are artistic and not afraid to be themselves.
