Did anyone else get selected as an alternate? I know its not a rejection, but I feel horrible...I feel like the chances of any finalist giving up their scholarship is next to none. Basically a rejection in my eyes ;(

If it cheers anyone up, I will point out that having declined the scholarship before for the Korea Semester program (yes, they used to offer this), it is entirely possible to move from "alternate" to "finalist" as people will give up their position in the scholarship for various reasons. I had to decline for reasons including: My school would have forced me to 'drop out' and re-enroll had I left the school for a semester, I wouldn't have been able to catch up in the numerous advanced classes such as AP Chemistry which I had signed up for, I wouldn't have been able to practice my sport, I would have had to suspend violin lessons for several months (which for me is bad because I am serious about my playing), and etc.

Moral of the Story: Life happens but never give up hope because you never know when your luck will suddenly (re)appear.

One of my best friends on the Russia Summer 2010 group was an alternate and was selected to attend. I do not think a lot of applicants are offered an alternate status, so don't lose hope

itsajourney: Congratulations! Hindi was my second choice; do you think that they are still sending out notifications for the Hindi program? Does the NSLI-Y notify you of all the programs you applied for at once, or is it one at a time? Sorry, I know that's a lot of questions.
sr5991: No, it's not only you, the anticipation is killing me! I really want to get this study abroad opportunity.

My dad called to ask that question and they basically told him that if you haven't heard, they haven't come to a decision yet. Or at least that's what they claim. Maybe its done by region? or age? I don't know. If I hear anymore info i'll post it here. =)

alternates to finalist

Yes, I can vouch for chewy! I was actually one of the nsliy 2010 Korea semester participant and two of the girls in the program were actually alternates and got the scholarships that others gave up! So, remain hopeful! People do give up the scholarships for various reasons!

@Nagela, for acceptances, they only only address the program you were accepted to, which was my first choice.. and I'm from Pennsylvania. I got mine in March 15

So I'm incredibly confused right now. The website How to Apply says that the application for the 2012-2013 year is closed. What is this referring to? Is it referring to the academic year program or the summer program? What if I'm going to be a sophomore when school starts and I want to do this program after my sophomore year? If the deadline already passed, that's really early.

That's for the academic year. Keep an eye on the website, though, because I think the summer applications are due by 10/31 or 11/1.

I just found this forum! I'm applying to NSLI-Y for the 2013 summer and was wondering when the application would be up.
