numbersense,
It seems like they accept based on a wide-verity of factors that may be different for each candidate.

For example read legallyblonde33's post on the first page of last year's thread:
Summer Science Program (SSP) 2011

He/she could be being overly humble, but it seems as though they do put a lot of emphasis on the essays. Reading through last year's thread hinted at what legallyblonde33 outright said, which was that the essays were very important.

I think several other previous attendees wrote a little about themselves on that thread, you might want to read through it (but not all at once: that thing is huge!)

Lat year had the same deadline. Mass accepted/rejected/wait listed on the 7th of April. Final decisions made around the 26th-ish.
2-3 weeks from now sounds about right.

I'm not holding my breath for it. I think I tried too hard to stay within the word count and my essays ended up without a lot of personality (I wish I would have just gone over). Oh well, I like my applications for other programs and have already been accepted to my back-up.

what do you mean by final decisions on the 26th ? Will we know by the 7th if we are in or not?

I was describing what happened *last year* (not "lat year", ugg typos). Which was the last kid we herd from was accepted on the 26th (maybe he was officially/unofficially wait listed and got in after someone else declined, I don't know), and that there were a lot of notifications on the 7th.

2-3 weeks-ish, for *this year* is a good guess based off last year, it's not an exact science.

How many of you went over the word limit for the essays? I stayed within the word limit and did the best I could.

@starwarnerd,
I stayed within the limit for all the essays and did the best I could too. I also had my AP Lang teacher help me with them. Actually she helped me with essays for MITES but I reused a lot of them for SSP. Hopefully that doesn't show too much..
