I went as a sophomore. The teacher recommendations are really important. If you don't get a ten on the maturity part of the evalution you won't get it. Um, they pay attention to class rank and GPA I think. And prior science experience is not that important, because I didn't have much.
But other than that I am not sure how they pick people. If you feel you were wrongly rejected you can appeal it (one kid got in last year that way).
There were some people that I wondered how they got in ... If you know what I mean. Lol.
Congratulations, SSTPers 2012. You will have the best summer of your life.

They received my application on March 27th (lol I applied really late). I'm surprised that it's rolling. It seems like it would be more difficult to evaluate applicants if you don't necessarily know what you're comparing them to.

Hey guys. I was just listed as an alternate. I'm not sure how many they'll accept but I'm hoping I get in! If anyone isn't going for sure, could you please let then know? I'm going to double my hours at work to help pay for this, but I don't want to do so unnecessarily. If you're still deciding, no worries of course Gaahhh I hate wait lists.

I'm not sure.. I went on the website and it says still accepting apps.. So maybe they just liked my application but not enough to actually accept me. This is annoying.

Here's some more info on the wait list:
The Alternate’s List is not ranked. We do have many students on the list. I anticipate that if spaces become available, it would happen in mid-April to mid-May. I would encourage students to not turn down another invitation while waiting for an SSTP invite simply because we have a long list. That being said, my guess is that (if we invite students off the Alternate’s List) the students with the most flexibility and ability to accept these later invitation who will be the ones able to attend.
I will indicate on your file you are interested in remaining on the Alternate’s List.

Hi guys.
I'm late to this thread (didn't know it existed). I think I sent in my application on February 13th and got an acceptance that was postmarked Feb 28th (or 29th or maaaaybe very early March).
Anyway, I've accepted and I think I'm going (waiting on a few other programs). It sounds like a great program and I can't wait to meet you guys!
If anyone wants to know:
I know I had a good rec from my Calc teacher, I didn't see the one from my physics teacher (who is also my XC/Track coach), but he likes me so I'll assume it was good.
PSAT was pretty good and SAT was great (I sent SAT in after my application (results from Jan. SAT) so I don't even know if they were considered)
I'm not really in science clubs/contest per se, besides being President of my Engineering Post, but I do a lot of things which incorporate STEM.
Other non science ec's, like sports.
3.98 GPA (two A- in English fresh year, which was incredibly lucky: I was a horrid writer when I entered, idk why they let me into pre-ap English, but I'm glad they did)
bla bla bla challenging courses bla bla bla
