volunteer abroad

I'm just about to start my junior year in high school, and I know that next summer I want to volunteer abroad. I've done some research, and I've seen that although volunteering abroad is a great experience, colleges do not value it that much because it simply shows if you have enough money to pay for the trip. Even though I will be paying for my own travels, I do not want to get clumped into a group of spoiled, over-privileged kids. Any suggestions for volunteer abroad programs that require more than a hefty check???? THANK YOU
