Caminos Al Futuro Applicants 2017

Hi Everyone!

I'm starting a new thread for potential applicants of the Caminos Al Futuro program at The George Washington University. I attended last year and was part of the inaugural cohort. If you have any questions, let me know!

I know it was tough going through the process last year without any alums to answer my questions.

The program gave us some insight on what made us competitive applicants, as well as what the Cisneros Institute and GW are looking for in participants.

And for those who don't know, Caminos al Futuro is a pre-college program for Hispanic and Latino students who have demonstrated their leadership in the Hispanic Community.

I'm currently applying for the Caminos al Futuro program and have some questions about what makes one a competitive candidate? Did a lot of people apply?

These are some things in my resume (essay)
    From San Juan PR
    4.18 gpa
    Student Council Secretary
    Student Council VP
Community Service program leader for adults with special needs
    NHS
    MUN
    good recommendation letter

    Thank you!!

Also, how long did they take to answer your application?

@polichick13 should I make sure to include my GPA and extracurriculars or should I focus more on the essay prompt? What are they looking for?

I would so you are super competitive, especially coming from the PR.

I think it took a month and a half. It was definitely very reasonable but felt like a super long time. Good luck!

Focus on the essay prompt! They want to see you fit into the cohort. While GPA is
Important , articulating your leadership skills is what makes you competitive.

They extended the deadline to March 10, do you think that means they didn't receive enough applicants initially? Are there usually a lot of applicants? I'm worried that my essay wasn't strong enough to get in.

@pinkbarbie It might mean that they didn't get enough applicants or it just might mean that enough people requested an extension. Last year was the first year, so I can't speak to how difficult it is to get into normally. I don't know if you can edit your essay after you have submitted it, but if so, I am happy to read it.

what are some of the things that definitely give you an advantage?
I'm from Guatemala and moved here like 4 years ago and my grades are pretty good (4.7 GPA & taking 8 college classes). I've been involved in the latinx community ever since I moved here by volunteering and being in a youth group. Thanks for creating this:)

I think being passionate about community and public service was a common theme amongst last years students. You are super impressive @aracellySP, I wouldn't stress. Extensive involvement is important!

  • pinkbarbiepinkbarbie Registered User Posts: 45 Junior Member
For anyone wondering, I emailed the program and they told me that they're "hoping" to get decisions out "sometime" this week!
  • polichick13polichick13 Registered User Posts: 38 Junior Member
