Any Oxbridge Academic program (paris, oxford, new York, Barcelona etc.) is good and Carnegie mellon summer academy for math and science is free with classes in calc (easy if you took it already, chemical eng. Robotics, biotechnology, digital forensics, music eng.) but basically for URM

Youth Policy Summit (Youth Policy Summit) is a week long leadership program for high school students around the country. In 2012 there are 6 programs to choose from at various college campuses. This program is academic and fun, and many of the colleges hosting programs have offered to waive admissions fees for YPS graduates!

it seems to me that all of these programs that look good on college applications are relating to math or science. Are their any good programs that relate to Economics, Business, or History?

Check out the St. Albans School of Public Service. It is competitive to get into but I got a good reaction during college interviews. It's basically government/law/policy/politics focused. If you search these threads I wrote a longer description of it. For current juniors (rising seniors during the summer of 2012).

EPGY vs. Regular Stanford U Summer Program for High Schoolers

Anyone know if there is a huge difference between how these programs are perceived on college apps? The regular Stanford Summer program awards grades and the classes are the full summer (too much) 8 weeks long. The EPGY courses are not graded and are for personal fun. Any thoughts? Any experience with either?

To anyone who wants to do something like these prestigious programs over the summer: SAVE YOUR MONEY AND DO RESEARCH. Why apply for all these research programs across America when you have a great starting point less than 10 miles away? (Unless you've already done hardcore research and just want to do more, I guess...)

Want a research/internship? Email, my friends. And in my experience, local universities aren't very responsive if you're only in high school. I literally googled "research centers in (city name here)" and picked the closest few. If you don't even want to go that far-- find the hospital closest to you. Instead of volunteering, ask them about research opportunities. The people I talked to said not a lot of kids my age asked about research, but usually would go for gift shop/front desk jobs.

Boom-- you don't need a program application. Just ask and you'll most likely find a summer-long opportunity.

Get a job; work or internship experience is invaluable.

Only do local research if you're unable to make it into research-oriented programs designed to benefit you most. Programs like RSI, Clark, HSHSP, and JAX SSP are undeniably worth it.
