I was a House page (better than a Senate page, fo sho lollll...there's a "big" rivalry haha)...it's a great program. A friend of mine was a Senate page and loved it. I suppose it's prestigious, but don't do it if you don't love politics...keep in mind that it is a real job, and that you will have to work pretty much a minimum of 8 hours a day, and you'll get assigned to late duty and end up working something like 16-hour days occasionally (yeah this happened to me). It's AMAZING if you love politics/IR/government, probably not-so-fun if you don't. Check out www.congressionalpage.org for more info about the programs, I don't feel like elaborating here. Apply to both Senators and your Rep. if you want the best chances of getting in. (It is pretty selective).

Well, this is a month late, but I figured I'd try and help in case you come back and check. I was a Senate summer page in June.

But to be a Senate or House page, you must be in your junior year to page during the fall/spring 4 month sessions. If you want to page in the summer 1 month sessions, you can either be a rising junior or rising senior. And mocha is right about one thing (although not about the House being better than the Senate! =P)...it is a ton of work. One of my days there started at 8:30 AM and I was the late shift and didn't leave until 2:30 AM. And I wasn't even there for July's Iraq all-nighter.

Like I said, I was a Senate summer page in June, so I'd be glad to answer any questions you might have. Best experience of my life, hands down.

how bout being a gov's page after your senior year? Seems like house and senate pages are only accessible for locals of DC.

House and Senate pages are from all over the country! There's a dorm set up only two blocks from the Capitol complex where pages stay, so it's certainly not just a DC restriction.

And as for the sessions, there's four of them. There are two four month sessions that you also attend school during (Sept. to December and January to May) OR you can do a month long program in the summer in either June or July. I was in the summer program myself and LOVED it.

this sounds great - is it advantageous if you have a personal connection with your house rep?

No -- the program is only for high school juniors (which includes the school year and the summer before and after junior year)

How hard is their school? Do you get a lot of homework? Could it ruin your GPA?

haha wow....this is my thread from last year,...time surely flies!! LOL Well just for the record, I DID apply for the page program AND i got IN! But...yes to answer your question, in my case, it would have hurt my GPA tremendously as a lot of the classes would not be matching up with my current schedule. So, as much as I wanted to go, I had to compromise especially because I would be loosing a lot of my key activities my ...international dance group, Editor in Chief of the school paper, and president of several clubs....i dont know if could do it.

Do i regret it? Kind of...yes. Im sure this would have been on an experience of its own, but I just didnt want to loose everything else that I had going for me, which were things I had worked my butt off for...does that make any sense?

I guess its really up to you...if you can make that compromise...definitely go!
