this sounds REALLY REALLY bad, and i would not do this, but isnt it so easy to lie on the book list? how would they check if you actually read the books you claim to have read?

Did anyone else apply this year?

Does anyone know when decisions might come out? The latest they can is May 1, but I think it'll be earlier than that depending on when you submitted your app. I think they got mine about a week ago (many are probably not in yet of course as the deadline is still a week and a half away.)

I am, I probably mailing stuff off Sunday or Monday.
I'm a little surprised and not surprised there hasn't been a lot of activity in the last few months. I attribute it to HSHSP being one continuous thread, instead of a yearly thing like some other programs, so people don't ask the same questions over and over again. Or maybe we/I have failed to find this years thread

I know about as much as you about notifications. Last year people posted that they were accepted between the 13th and 18th of April. Some rejected on the 24th and then another acceptance on the 26th (I would guess that person was an official or unofficial wait-list who got in after someone else declined).

So late second to early third week in April sounds like their first round of acceptances. Rejections seem to come in near the end of the month.

I'm applying! I really hope I get in, because committing research in the fields they offer is just amaaaazing. I hope it's not as selective now as it was before, because my stats are a little under par . If I don't make it, that's fine because I'm applying to a few other programs, including a few of the programs that NASA offers for HS students.

Anyone else notice that in the pdf program announcement ( http://education.msu.edu/hshsp/pdf/H...12-ProgAnn.pdf ) they gave the required materials list twice?

It's given on page two, then again on pages 6 and 7. I wouldn't have thought much of it if it was just a repeat, but its clear somebody typed it up twice: the items are listed in a different order and uses fairly different wording (although it tells you to do the same thing).

For example, the first essay prompt from page two:
"A 300-600 word, applicant-written essay describing the nature and origin of your interests in science and in research, what you hope to learn by participating in the program, and what you feel you can contribute should you be selected as a participant."

Versus the one from the bottom:
"A personal essay of 300-600 words. The essay must be neat and should address your interests in scientific research and in attending the HSHSP; what do you think you can contribute and any other significant related events in your life that you feel would be helpful to the Director in evaluating your application. I do not want to receive an essay that details your lifetime awards and honors, but rather an honest and compelling story about why you want to spend 7 weeks of your summer away from family and friends, doing full-time research, and why your participation would make difference in your life."

Like I said: the same thing, though I feel like the one from the bottom gives me a better idea of what exactly it is that they're looking for.

(only difference in content I've noticed is that the bottom list specifies that they want your class ranking while the top doesn't, and that the top one requests letter from two math or science teachers, while the bottom asks for one science teacher and specifies no subject for the second teacher)

Little bit too late to matter, but I found it interesting.

The problem is...I can't remember what books I've read. Plus, I used to love reading, but then high school came along and there went my time....

Quick questions for you guys.

What did you guys put for the part that says "Is there anything else you would like to tell me about yourself?" I was like..."uh....."

Also, do you think they prefer that your book-essay be about a science-y book, or another type of book?

@Bioboy12

I just wrote about some awards I got. They didn't ask for a resume or list of activities or anything so I guess that doesn't matter that much to them? Plus there's only a little space for the additional info anyway.

@bbcarol
I did get accepted to SSTP though I'm kinda peeved that they just changed my FA because my family really can't afford anymore than what they had but um I guess I just wanted to increase my chances / mirror the college application process. I also just like so many programs!
Um I just finished applying to SAMS and HSHSP.
So... Yeah?
I mean we'll see when I get the declinations/acceptances this April.

Yeah it seems really awesome, hope I get in. Good luck to all of you. On the bright side I have a backup in case I don't get into the programs I applied to-- I have an interview with a researcher/professor at state flagship next week. At least if I went that route I could stay at home which would be nice. But, I really hope I get one of these opportunities! I think that for those of us who have already sent our stuff in, we could be finding out reasonably soon, in a week or two.

About how much annual income do you need to qualify for 75-100% financial aid?

Nope. One asked me if he was supposed to mail it or if I should. I just told my teachers to give them to me. I thought it'd be much easier on them.

I don't think HSHSP cares either way.
