Roommate Assignments

If you don't request a specific roommate, how do they assign them? Is it completely random?

My son is a freshman. We had requested a double and to be part of the Residential Learning Communities. In his case the business school. He did get into the program but wound up with a quad (but a very big room). Three of them including my son are business majors but the 4th roommate who was from China never showed up. They place a kid about a month later who was not a business major. His hallway consists of this room and the rest are singles. According to at least a few kids on his hall they asked for doubles and got singles. So it really is pot luck. In terms of roommates, they did not send out a questionaire asking specific questions to help them match roommates.

The assignment is random, unless, probably, you indicate a preference. I'm Asian (transfer student from Asia), but I have an American roommate for Fall 2009.

its not really random. Like lets say if you are Asian, it is incredibly likely that you will be roomed with another Asian.

There is a period in which you can change. But I will tell you that even if you do get a jerk, learning how to properly deal with people of all types is a critical resource you will attain.

yes, if you don't request, your roommates will be chosen at random. but not completely.
i think it works according to your nationalities, for international students, they usually have their roommates who are from the same country or regione, i like it
