Buffalo vs Delaware

edited April 2012 in SUNY at Buffalo
Our Daughter got accepted to Engineering in Penn State, Md, Delaware and Buffalo. She thought Md and Penn St were too big for her and likes Buffalo and Delaware. She got nice monetary offers from both. We are NY residents so we'd get a huge break in Buffalo. According to stats, both schools are pretty similar. We'd appreciate any thoughts you may have, I guess we'll post same under Delaware.

    Delaware Vs Buffalo.

Delaware has lots of pros (weather, campus, sports, etc.) but the cost for us is not worth it. UB has had a great reputation in Engineering with great facilities. Son also offered a merit scholarship at UB and no merit at Delaware so the cost difference is a factor. We are also keeping in mind that engineering may require an extra year (especially for my son as he wants to minor in Computer Science) so we have to factor in that additional cost.

For us, there are many flights out of JFK, LGA and Islip so there would be no problem coming home.

If cost is not a factor, then it is personal preference.

We are currently deciding between UB, Bing and others though the best merit aid was from non-engineering privates which he will not end up going to.

MPM - can you elaborate on the reasons for your Delaware thoughts if money isn't a problem? Both schools made nice offers, yes Delaware would be a bit more, but I am having problems finding differences in the programs at both schools

Does your daughter know which area of engineering she wants to major in? That would be one deciding factor.

It looks like Civil/Environmental. It looks like Environmental is a past of Civil Engineering in both schools

I would go for Buffalo, since it will be cheaper for you. The two schools are ranked very close to each other (Delaware-52 and Buffalo-57) and neither one shows up on the ranked lists for civil and environmental. Best of luck with the decision making!

okay..... they're basically the same as Mattmoosemom was saying in academics. The only reason I said to look into UDelaware was because it would be a different environment than your daughter is used to. For example, I am going to UB next year because of the price, academics, large university feel, etc. But the location is the only downfall (cold weather, annoying winters). At UDelaware I'm pretty sure the weather is nicer and there is a beach nearby.... But UB is amazing too, so it's your choice. Im a bit biased bc im going to UB, but I think the price is pretty hard to beat.

Hope this helps. Let me know!

Agonizing choice, D decided on UB, programs are nearly identical, I have to believe that this year's pool of students will set a new standard for the school, and the education in engineering will be superb. Thanks to all for your good advice.

whldch- We will see you (well our kids will) in Ub engineering!

I agree that they will have a great group. Can't beat the $$$$ and I think the education, for engineering, will be phenomenal.

Had I realized how good UB was for eng. and that my son would lke to attend, I never would have had him apply to so many schools. (15 schools, 15 acceptances and off to UB he'lll be.)

Thanks Crazed, we're excited. We're headed to environmental, what is your son studying?

^ crazed - your post made me remember my own surprise last year when D chose UB and the more I learned about it the more I was impressed...I know lots of schools are described as "hidden gems" but I REALLY think UB is one of them....

My son does not know which area of Eng. he wants yet. I hope they expose him to enough to help him decide. He will attempt a minor rather than Honors college. Not much room for the honors courses in the engineering schedule as it is, so definitely not room for both.

I hope some of you are still on here! My son will have to make this same decision soon as well. Live in NY, Buffalo gave him merit aid, great program etc. Going up to see in a few weeks. Haven't heard from Delaware yet, but got the scholarship letter, so assuming he'll get in, not assuming enough money to compare to Buffalo at all. Are you and your children happy with their decisions to attend Buffalo? And why? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
