Do I find out which credits will be accepted once I go to orientation? Also, I've taken math (precalc) at my current SUNY community college and I need to know if I still have to take the math placement exam?

To your first question, yes.

To your second question, it depends. We have four different calc sequences, so we usually recommend students take the placement exam to make sure they're placed in the right sequence. You lose nothing by taking it; if you want your credits to override the exam, they can; but the exam might place you, for example, into the three-course Calc sequence instead of the two-course sequence, which, if you're not a mathy person, might be a better bet.

Chris, are you sure the math placement works that way? At least in olden times when I took it, it didn't really give any information recommending the 2 or 3 semester sequence. For example, if you got a 5, you'd be recommended for MAT 131, the 2 semester sequence... but if you got a 6, you'd be recommended MAT 126, in the 3 semester sequence--so if you score higher, the easier course is recommended!

No, that makes sense, as 126 is the second of the three courses. It's part time and part mastery -- if you're showing you have a little bit of calc behind you by scoring a six, you'll still need two semesters, but the 131 might be covering stuff you already know. That's not to say you can't jump "down" and take the 131, but that's just what the recommendation would be.

I have a question regarding this too, on the orientation packet it says that you should gather your transcripts and syllabi in order to determine transfer credit- so will our credits be evaluation at orientation or will it be ready for us to review at oreintation.


Also, what happens when one can not attend that thing on Jan 25 (I belive it is called discover stony brook). There is 0% chance i can go to that unless i can come with my infant.. which i dont think stony brook would be thrilled with.
