Do we have to have been granted work study to work on campus? My family's financial situation is a little tight and I would like to take the strain of by working a little during the school year but an off campus job is a no go freshman year for my parents.

For specific work-study positions, yes... but there are plenty of non-work-study positions both on and off campus as well. Look for signs for the job fair -- it's usually the first or second Friday of the semester.
