Swarthmore released its statistics for the enrolled first-year class today:

http://www.swarthmore.edu/x6271.xml

A few things jumped out at me:

1) African American enrollment jumped up to 12% in this year's entering class, up from 7% last year.

This is a big gain in Af Am yield. 14% of the acceptance letters went to Af Am students and 12% of the enrolled class is Af Am.

Latino (12%) and Asian American (17%) remained the same. I am sure that Swat is extremely pleased to see Af Am enrollment jump; there is a lot of volatility from year to year.

42% of the first year class indentifies themselves as American students of color. An additional 6% are international students. With just 52% of the class being white/American students, it is no surprise that the campus seems so diverse.

2) The trends towards more public school students and fewer private school students continued.

65% of this year's class came from public schools, compared to 62% last year and 57% in 2001.

21% from private non-parochial schools compared to 25% last year and 31% in 2001

Parochial schools remained the same (5%). Overseas schools fell slightly from 9% to 8%.

3) Class rank fell slightly: val/sal from 27% to 20%, top 2% from 45% to 42%, and top-10% from 88% to 82%.

This could be a function of the increased diversity. It may also be a function of fewer schools reporting class rank. Or, this could be a consequence of merit-aid competition for wealthier students as these numbers are a drop from the accepted class. Amherst saw a similar decline last year.

2006-2007 Common Data Set Posted

Swarthmore has posted their 2006-2007 Common Data Set at:
http://www.swarthmore.edu/Admin/inst...ch/cds2006.pdf

Some interesting statistical tidbits gleaned from the numbers:

1) Acceptance rate for women = 16% vs 23% for men

2) Acceptance rate for ED applicants = 37%

3) 42% of entering students admitted ED (assuming all ED acceptances enroll)

Unfortunately, wait list admits are very, very low - a handful.
It's in your best interests to begin moving with a secondary back up plan.

From Swarthmore's Daily Gazette on Friday, March 30:

Swarthmore received 5,244 applications for admission to the Class of 2011 and admitted 890 students in all for an acceptance rate of seventeen percent. The number of applications represents an eight percent increase over last year and a forty percent increase over three years ago. According to Dean of Admissions Jim Bock '90, "this is the most selective admitted class in history."

152 students were admitted in the two Early Decision rounds and 738 were admitted during Regular Decision. Bock expects these acceptances to yield a class of about 365 for next fall. The yield for the Class of 2010 was about forty percent between Early and Regular Decision, and "we took about twenty students off the waitlist." This year over 900 students were offered a spot on the waitlist.

I heard that is it's possible to call the office and ask where we are on the waitlist. Will Swarthmore answer that?

The acceptance stats are out:

http://www.swarthmore.edu/x10904.xml

Preliminary: 17% acceptance rate. 53% US students of color (22% Asian Am, 15% Latino/a, 15% African Am). 6% international. 61% public school.

The final, final numbers won't be out until a press release that always comes out the first week of classes in September.

Have Swarthmore's SAT statistics been falling relative to the national average and relative to those of other elite academic institutions in the last decade? I seem to recall that Swarthmore's used to be about average compared to those of the US News top 10 national universities and the top 5 liberal arts colleges, but it's 707 critical reading average, 700 Math average, and 700 writing average would seem to put it behind nearly all of the top 10 national universities and top 5 liberal arts colleges (and behind Pomona (ranked 7th in 2007) and Harvey Mudd as well). Am I remembering incorrectly, or has this trend of being on the low end among elite schools in terms of SAT scores always been the case?
