Finally Chose a School

Just to let everyone know. My daughter opted to go to the BFA program at UMD. It is a good program, we went up twice to see their productions and they are as strong as the numerous BFA programs we have seen with the U-Guthrie productions. Other than the cold weather in Duluth, I think she is satisfied with her choice. She ended up not choosing a couple of good private colleges, primarily because they could not offer as intense of a theatre education.

Duluth is great! I can totally put her in contact with people in the program if need be. I think it is a better program than the Guthrie program...

Who do you know at Duluth.

NYQ12 who do you know. at Duluth? When my daughter went for a day visit she met Tom Isbel and he made a really strong impression with her. A couple students from her conservatory high school are also planning to go. It was a tough call between a private college that was offering close to 50% in grants/scholarships, but she really wants to concentrate on theatre and felt that a broader liberal arts program would distract her from concentrating on theatre.

Do you or anyone know of any schools, especially abroad, that offer an intensive summer program in acting. With the money savings from going to a state college, I thought exposure to a second program during one of the summers might be worth it.

I know RADA many programs in London have summer sessions. You could always send her to NYC for a summer program too. Both would be great experiences. Pretty much every conservatory has some sort of summer program.

And, I do not know many people at Duluth. I have one friend in particular who is currently a sophomore in MT. And then I know a couple of grads who have found success. The great thing about the program is that you get a broader training than you would with the Guthrie Program. The Guthrie Program is very very narrow training - mainly classical "guthrie style" acting. Which in turn, tends to limit the mediums of work you can be successful in. I know Duluth really gives diverse opportunities which is great. My friend who goes there didn't get into any of the programs she auditioned for and is actually one of the most talented people I have ever met... Surprise surprise... This whole process is crazy. But, she went up there with the thoughts of trying to transfer and she decided right away she didn't want to any more. She loves everything about the program and says she has grown so much... etc etc. The only downside to it is that it is a little secluded. Duluth is a fun city, but you are about 3 hours away from Minneapolis/St. Paul where the great theatre community lays. However, the program is very well respected down in the cities who have some of the best regional theatres in the country. (The Guthrie, The Children's Theatre Company....). I hope she loves it!

I am really impressed with all I have read about the summer program at Guildhall - has anyone here attended?

If people are still waiting to hear from Purchase, I was contacted today and told I was taken off of the wait list and accepted. If it means anything to you, I will not be accepting the offer because I will be attending U of Minn in the Guthrie Program.
