A friend's son is going to be a freshman at Towson this year and got his schedule last week. It appears to be a totally random set of classes that don't have anything to do with what he thinks he might major in. They're really scratching their heads as to where they came from. He'll meet with his advisor on the 25th--will he be able to change all of them to classes he'd prefer? (And just where did they get those classes from anyway?)

Yep, the classes really are totally random. They assign them based on geneds he will need. He should've filled out a form giving preferences. Unfortunately, he most probably won't be able to change it. I'd have liked to change some things in my schedule, but the only thing I could change was a class I'd gotten AP credit for. He'll have more of a say in his schedule every semester but this one.

Thanks for the response. That's good to know about future semesters. And I was hoping there was some reason for the classes he was assigned--getting some requirements out of the way isn't a bad thing. Off the top of your head, do you know <about> what the various requirements are?

I probably could ramble them off, but it'd be easier for you to go here:
Undergraduate Catalog - Undergraduate Studies - Towson University and view the catalog.
The gened requirements should be on one of the first few pages.
To give you an idea, Towson splits them into "categories" like I A, I B, I C, I D, II A, IIC , IIC2.... everything from lab sciences to health classes to history classes. There really are a lot of required courses. Thankfully, though, they offer some interesting ones and a few gen eds can be applied to your major (like psyc 101 for a psych major or an advanced writing course for a major).
