First off, overall I don't HATE IT, because I know I am lucky to have the ability to get any education, and there are many bright spots within a community college education (certain professors etc).

With that said, the thing I dislike the most is the prominent mediocrity. This includes the many, many lazy upper middle-class students. The lack of a real political culture is part of that as well.

take as many classes as you can and transfer out.

i took 21 credits over the summer am taking 25 credits now.

At the end of this term, I will have spent 12 months receiving 63 credits.

I went to a community college because it was the only option I had at the time. However, what I didn't like about my school was the fact that they restricted my opportunities to take Honors classes, despite having a 3.5+GPA. Also, there was a sense of intellectual deprivation I felt among my classmates. For this reason, I want to transfer to a college that doesn't restrict my intellectual freedom and choices.

I HATED being at a local CCC. For example, the first time I went to Saddleback College I saw at least 10 people that I knew. It felt like highschool all over again. I at least wanted an atmosphere that did not remind me of my worst 4 years of my life. Not the worst, but you get the picture. This is the reason why I chose Irvine Valley College first, then transferred over to Santa Monica College. The only gripe that I have with CCC's is the lack of social scene. A better social atmosphere is what I am looking forward to when I transfer, although, since I will be commuting to my college I doubt my social life will change much.

i am pressed for time, so i'll give a few.

    1. Embarassment to tell your friends, neighbors etc that u attend a ccc, which is considered by many a failure to get into a "real college".

    2. like Nikkei said, lack of a social life. people go to classes and go home. hard to make new friends.

    3. environment that surrounds u while u're at ccc. a lot of people w/ out goals, failures, etc.

    i'll add more later.

So true... To be honest, when people ask me I usually tell them one of the top 5 UC's. I feel like a failure by saying, "I am going to Santa Monica College" instead of "I am going to UCLA." Of course, the latter sounds much better.

My biggest problem personally is it does not provide a challenge. This is not to say I am some brilliant genius. I have some professors who dont take attendance..I hate that. I know ultimately its up to me to attend class, its basic discipline. By and large the worst thing about it is the other students. I hardly have people in my classes who take it seriously. All the talking through class, throwing ****, etc..its lame. I wish to hell i wouldnt have dropped out of HS to go make 150k a year for 2 years until the industry went south lol. BAHHHHHHHHH

Social or lack therfore of. Everybody in my classes went to school with each other so its like high school all over again. all the people I friends with are at least 8 years by senior.

I do not like the people in my CC at all. Case in point: in my psych class last semester a person was discussing how his brother's death ruined his life and led him to a long stay in a mental hospital. While he's telling his story, which was really quite affecting, the two girls who sat in front of me giggled, whispered, passed notes, and IMed the jerk who was standing outside the classroom and waving at them. Couldn't they have at least pretended to care? So disrespectful.

I wind up sitting in front of the fireplace in the student center reading something instead of even attempting to socialize with anyone. It's just not worth it.

But I do have to say that I have received an extremely good education at my CC. My professors have all been very helpful and passionate about their subjects. And for me that's really all that matters

I hate that the professors have absolute power over the courses at a CC, well my CC at least anyway. There is practically nothing the department or higher ups can do to alter a professors course, grading, etc. and it's not like the tests are standardized for the course, it's specific to each teacher. Luckily for me, I have good professors. But this could have been a nightmare if I had bad professors.

As said before social life. Lack of school spirit. The administration sucks. Yes registration sucks too. I can't get into the classes i want such as chemistry even tho half the class would drop by the end of the semester. I hate it when people drop the class in the middle of the semester when there are so many people trying to get into it at the beginning of the semester. Not fair for people trying to get into the class. Oh yea the smokers. I find it absolutely disgusting. So many smokers here. But other than that community college is ok. Academicallly it's pretty good. I'm being challenged here.

This is all true - lack of social life, school spirit, and community feel.

However, cherish your time at CC. I'm in "hell week" at UC Berkeley and I have never wanted the manageable workload of a CC back so badly in my life.

Oh, and if you plan to transfer to a large university, forget any inprovement as far as administration goes. Ha.

Yes--that is a big one! They should establish a system where students who have a record of finishing classes should be given some kind of priority.

    IzzieBear-what's your major?
