How important is the completion of pre reqs for USC?

Need some insight.

I'm applying to USC Annenberg majoring in communication.
Come application time in the spring, I will have about 30 credits from my CC, looking at a 3.7/3.8 GPA. Now I went to an Art School in San Francisco(2007) for a year racking up a 3.0 with about 24 credits. I spoke to an admission officer who said they heavily look at your current grades as oppose to HS & previous college gpa. Hoping that is the case when it comes to me. To set me apart from the applicants, I have a few quite interesting EC's. I was a founding father for the first fraternity at the art school I attended, I'm also a member of Phi Theta Kappa(honor society). I also work as an editor for news corporation. My GPA when combined isn't up to par with the typical USC profile, but I'm hoping they can look pass this. Any thoughts, suggestions?

Hey guys. I'm looking to transfer as a junior. I have a 3.2 cumulative but every semester my gpa has been raising. Its ranged from a 2.5-3.6(with 17 units in one semester). So its been consistently raising. What is the possibility of getting in? What would make for my best chances? I'm looking to go into business or econ for my major but I know marshall is extremely difficult. Can I transfer without going into marshall? I know a dumb question but I am curious!

I would like to transfer to Marshall and pursue the CSBA (computer science and business administration dual degree) program? Is this available to transfers?

for Marshall, its the only college I will be applying to transfer to. Should I mention this to the counselor there?

My reason for transferring to USC is that I think this would be the best fit for what I would like to do in college. I want to pursue the CSBA dual degree program. This is the reason I did not want to apply to Haas or ucla's bizecon program.

This is a little off topic, but if I want to get in to USC for the Spring 2014, when would I need to apply? Also, what happens if I don't have all the recommended courses done at the time that I send in my application, but do complete them all the following semester?

poisonx you cant apply for spring. U apply for the fall but they may offer spring admissions for some students.

poisonx, since they are only recommended, it doesn't mean your chances are totally ruined if they're not completed but the more you have completed the better your chances (although by how much I'm not sure). Like you, I also won't have all of them completed by the time I apply but am going to take them next semester, so I'm planning to just explain this in the "additional info" section of the common app. I asked my advisor another question about my plans of what I want to major and minor in if I got in and she said I could explain my goals in the short answer response (although, I'm not too sure which short answer response she's talking about exactly...), so I'm assuming I can also explain my plans about my courses in the additional info section. The instructions for it says "Please upload a document here if you wish to provide details of circumstances or qualifications not reflected in the application.", and I think that counts. Hope this helps.

Schully, your ECs look good so at this point I think focusing on writing a stellar essay should be a priority for you. A good one will really help set you apart from the crowd especially if your GPA isn't the strongest.

dvcstudent, from what I've read USC really likes upward trends. Concentrate on writing a strong essay and hopefully, you have some good ECs. Sorry I don't know the answer to your not transferring to Marshall question.

Hello, I am currently a freshmen at College of the Desert, and I want to apply to USC for next fall. My grades right now are all A-'s and A's. Taking 14 units this semester. I recently just found out that USC does not accept my Math-005 class (trig) as transferable units even though CSU's accept the credits and its a college level math course. So as of now I have 6 transferable units instead of 11. I am planning on taking 18 transferable units next semester(spring) and hopefully do 6 in the summer to make a total of 30 transferable units. USC requires you do to 30 transferable units for them to not look at your high school grades correct? Or am I horribly mistaken and causing this unnecessary stress? Anyways, taking those 6 units (2 classes) in the summer would work correct? Or am I going to have to delay a year?

If you have 30 credits or less, they'll look at your high school grades. I don't think the summer classes will work because they can only assess you based on your grades and credits at the time of your application. They might send you a spring grade request later if your fall grades are good enough to not be flat-out rejected, but you'll still have less than 30 credits when you apply (since the deadline's February 1). I'm not sure if they'll look at summer coursework but if they do, I would think it could only be after an acceptance. You may want to email an admissions counselor to be sure or call the office of admissions.

I was planning on contacting the counselor at USC. When you say 30 credits you mean transferable right? Its not like you can just have take courses that add up to 30units and apply for transfer. Right? If they have to look at mmy high school grades would they even consider what I did in college? And what is a good GPA to have for a transfer? Somewhere from 3.7-4??

I'm not 100% positive but I don't think they have to be 30 transferrable credits? at least not for the decision. They just want to see your performance at that point. I could be wrong though. Yes they will look at both your high school and college grades, but high school grades will take precedence (unfortunately for me :\)

On USC's transfer page it states: "There is no minimum number of transfer units you must complete before applying for admission. However, if you have completed fewer than 30 units, we will focus primarily on your high school record and results from the SAT or ACT." Check here Transfer Students - USC Undergraduate Admission and the pdf files on the right side for more info.

The average transfer GPA is a 3.6, so anything higher will make you a competitive candidate.

Oh really? Well I am taking 14 units right now. (Only 6 are transferable) my GPA is.3.83. Next semester im taking 18(all transferable). Hopefully my GPA will be around 3.8 as well. So would that work?? I have 30units bur only 24 would be transferable. Im under the knowledge that you need 30transferable units. That's why I was like freaking out about only having 24.
