Hi!
I just graduated high school a few weeks ago and I'm going to be attending Northeastern and doing the NUin semester abroad program in Australia starting August. I'm not very keen on going to Northeastern and am seriously considering transferring by second semester to either Eugene Lang, Fordham or NYU. NYU was my first choice school, however my counselor basically said it was a waste of time for my to apply there because I wouldn't get in. I did apply to Fordham and Eugene Lang though. I was denied by Fordham but got into Eugene Lang. I ultimately want to end up at NYU though. So basically I have a few questions.
1. Is it possible to transfer schools by second semester if you have spent your first semester at the school abroad?
2. Will I have a chance at getting into Eugene Lang, Fordham or NYU by second semester if transferring is possible? I will only have grades from my school in Australia at this point, but I will be officially attending Northeastern.
3. Is it better to just wait out the year at Northeastern and apply to NYU or Fordham for sophomore year?
4. Would it look bad if I transfer to Eugene Lang by second semester and then transfer again by junior year to NYU?
5. Will I have a better chance at getting into NYU by transferring from Northeastern or Eugene Lang?

1. Typically, you apply by second semester, and are accepted for sophomore year. I'm sure it's possible to apply to transfer after a semester abroad for sophomore year, though.

2. So long as you keep your grades up, maybe. Your high school grades will still comprise the bulk of your application, though, so you may not get into Fordham (I don't know your stats, so I can't comment on NYU).

3. See 1. I don't think you can even transfer for spring semester at most colleges, and trying to do so at this point will mean that you are essentially applying in the first place again, as the colleges will only have your high school record to evaluate. So yes, it is better to wait.

5. No idea! Just keep your grades and ECs up, wherever you are.

Why approach this with an assumption that you aren't going to like Northeastern? Lots of freshman arrive every year at schools that were safeties for them - and end up loving their schools, much to their surprise. But you have to go in with an open mind, looking for the positives. If you show up looking for things to hate, you'll probably find those instead. If at the end of your first year, you're still dissatisfied, you can transfer - but the number who want to falls off dramatically by the end of first year.

If you were admitted to the NUin program at Northeastern it means that your application was not strong enough to qualify for regular admission there. Since you were already denied at Fordham, I doubt if you would be accepted at NYU based on your high school record and one semester of study at an international affiliated school. You will not even be a registered Northeastern student until spring semester so you would not even be transferring from Northeastern.

If you know fir certain that you don't want to attend NU, then why start this fall? Take a gap year, make some money, and come up with a new college list that only includes places that you would be happy to attend.
