Ok so I took 6 classes at UCR during the two quarters I was there from 2008-early 2009 and did badly in half of them, like below C badly. I was thereby dismissed with a pretty bad GPA, i wanna say a 1.7 and here i am almost four years later about to transfer out of a community college where I am a psych undergrad. I have an ok GPA of about a 3.3, hoping to bump it to a 3.5 after i finish the last 3 classes I need to transfer out this semester. Problem is, the grades I got at UCR are bringing me way down and I cannot get in to retake those classes at UCR because of the high traffic of students attempting to add classes right now. My chances are looking slim to none as far as getting into one of the coursed im attempting to get into. Current students get priority first and then extension students which includes me. I had thought I would be saved by some form of academic forgiveness but now i'm scrambling to find a way to get past this roadblock. There is seemingly no other way to boost up my GPA without retaking those classes at UCR and replacing those F's i got in order to bring up my overall cumulative transfer GPA. I am posting here in the hopes of getting some type of guidance, hell even some optimism would be nice as the system has left me hopeless. You would think there'd be something in place for a student is trying to make right at a CC and transfer out but my past is haunting me, please help. Tell me there is something else I can do besides hope that a spot opens up next quarter when im left sitting in the dark this one.

There is hope for all of this. I was kind of in the same boat.

What college did you belong to? CHASS?

I went to UCR from 03-05. Screwed off. Got dismissed. Joined the Marines, where i was summarily straightened out.

From last year till this semester I retook Fs i had gotten in 05. 4 exactly. Now im ready to reapply for readmission. If you take concurrent enrollment usually the department where you need to take the classes (eg History History Dept etc.) will add you to the class if you have your stuff straight and show up there the first day with the concurrent enrollment forms. Then you have your academic advisor of your former college sign off on it and make sure you hit an A.

You can only retake up to 4 to help boost your gpa and "variance" as they call it.

Go walk in advising to your former college and make sure that you make up those classes.

Personally I think you'll be okay. Im sure they will look at the fact that you were dismissed because of academics but you have shown significant improvement while at the cc. im pretty sure if you write that into your essay they will understand. I graduated in 2009 and attended RCC and other cc, since getting classes at rcc is just unrealistic. I applied to ucr last fall and was accepted with a 3.2 and no extra curriculars although I was a supervisor at a job I had for 3 years and stated that. This is the kicker tho the 3.2 was from my main cc while i had 1.71 at RCC for failing math classes and poly sci (although im not sure if they could see that because they were non transferable classes) and plenty of withdraws from both schools (they do affect your gpa). UCR is pretty accepting of transfer students, but make sure your essay is killer and I think you'll be okay. Try talking to your counselor about retaking those classes you failed at the cc your at, im sure that will also look good on your app since they do take into consideration the classes that you plan to take and transcripts arent do till the end of may!
