Transfer chances eliminated?

Long story so I'm going to try to put this in as few words as possible. Joined the Marines in 2000 straight out of high school, was in Iraq for 9 months for the invasion. Got out in 2004, started school at a Ca community college. Then it went downhill, PTSD got ahold of me, I was drinking heavily, meanwhile I was still in school but getting horrendous grades and I do mean horrendous!!! So from 2005-10 I Ended up with a 1.6 GPA. I jumped in and out of school, took classes that I didn't need, and failed the classes I needed.

Fast forward to now, I'm sober, the PTSD is under control, im clearheaded and focused. Since coming back to school I've had a 3.0 GPA, but after calculating my total GPA, I'm still pretty low for Cal state standard even though majority of my GE stuff is done, and am currently finishing up on my major requirements.

I guessing im looking for opinions as to my chances of getting into a state school. And what I can do to improve my chances.

BTW, I'm already above 60 units, and am retaking classes that I have failed.

Admissions committees dont just look at the number. If you write a letter talking about the issues you've overcome and your recent grades reflect that, you can be admitted even with a low overall GPA.

Recent grades are always worth more than old ones, for admissions purposes.

I'll add, if you have documentation from a physician, counselor, etc., include that in your application (I don't know about the CA publics, but there's often an Additional Information section) to show what you've been through and your current condition.

Thanks for the prompt response you guys I really do appreciate it! Ever since I calculated my GPA yesterday I've been in a depressive state and trying to fight it and trying to stay optimistic! When I was doing my initial application for CSU last night for Fall 2013 it asked for my GPA. Should I just fill in my culminative GPA and then go from there? Cal states don't ask for any letters or additional information.

I have my disability rating for PTSD and medical diagnosis from the VA to show as documentation.

Congrats on getting back on track. I think you still have a great shot at the Cal publics, since you definitely show an upward trend, with a good reason as well. Make sure grades stay up.
