I have inside knowledge as to how the transfer students are selected at Columbia.

First, the top-tier athletes are admitted. Then, an initial screening process occurs when the scholars with over a 3.7 GPA in ultra-rigorous course loads in their major, are US citizens, and have high estimated financial costs are separated from the rest of the dreamers. Afterward, these students' names are written on pool balls, and these balls get thrown into a lottery machine. However, most of the balls are red and some are blue. When a red ball comes out, the student is waitlisted. When a blue one comes out, the student is accepted.

Or something like the above. The process is just too selective to deduce any algorithm admissions might have...

My first choice is Cornell, but I'm still undecided about applying to Columbia.

OMG this tread is making me stop breathing...it really is early but i think preparing beforehand is nothing bad. I am currently a freshmen in 40s ranked national university--don't really like it here. Do you guys know what columbia particularly looks at when considering transfers?

I'm applying to Columbia! I believe, like any other school, Columbia looks at GPA/courseload, your extracurriculars and essay, and recommendations. Maybe even in that order.

Applying to Columbia as an Anthropology major from a california community college. I know the chances are slim, probably even more so for a comm college student...
applying to UC's, and privates.

UVa and Georgetown, maybe. If I apply to transfer at all it will be for financial reasons, so I may as well throw in an app to my former dream school as I really don't want to leave the city. With my GPA precariously hovering just below a 3.8, though, I seriously doubt I have a shot.

Brown, UPenn, Havard and Chicago. My GPA is a 3.89 right now, I'm hoping I'll be able to pull it over 3.9 after this quarter.

Hey, I'm applying to Columbia as a really-really-reaaally high reach, also applying to NYU, BU and Northeastern - to each as a Neuroscience and Behavior major. Applying from a big state school where I'm an international student, no idea what my GPA is so far, it's only my first semester in college.

My chances are probably extremely slim since my HS record sucks: finished high school in another country => unimpressive GPA with a really heavy workload (which they probably won't pay attention to since it's a foreign school) + no HS extracurriculars since my school never offered any.

So I'm currently trying really hard to participate in ECs and study hard in college and praying that's going to help, hah.

@nikanikanika : well I think because you're international student(me either!) and I think the university maybe knows that it's pretty different or hard to do ECs in some high schools in other countries. So I think keep studying and doing ECs will be much helpful and I think you don't have to worry that much about your high school stuffs. And Columbia is a reach for 99.9% of students lol
