1 semester at University & 1 semester at community college vs. whole year at college

I am currently a freshman at UW-Madison but I really am not having a good time here at all. I want to go to community college near my home for second semester but my parents will not let me. I am definitely transferring next year hopefully to NYU. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should do, ie. Sticking out the year or going home for second semester? Will going home to community college have a larger impact on whether or not I get into school, especially if I have to go home due to family issues?

I am a former Badger and am truly sorry that you haven't found some good time at The Party School.

Nonetheless, if I were you, I would listen to your parents. Try to finish off your freshman year and earn some solid grades at Madison. Then, leverage your experience there as a strength to transfer out to a comparable or better school. If your interest lies within one of Wisconsin's many highly ranked programs, you may need to make a really good case in your transfer application why NYU or XYZ is a better choice without coming across negatively.

On a personal note, it usually takes one a while to find his/her own niche groups in Madison. Keep looking.

most definitely finish the year at madison, especially if you want to transfer to NYU, i had to finish the year at a big 10 school i really disliked before transferring, too, so i know how you feel.

Finish out the year at Madison. During that time also research your transfer options. I suggest this because NYU is huge, like Madison, although it is a bit less friendly. Also, if finances are a consideration, NYU can be more expensive.

That being said, if you do well through out your year at UW (rather than go home to a CC), then you'll be in a better position to tranfer out to another school (just make sure you know your reasons for the move and you can articulate them to the school(s) you may be interested in).
