Modern, yes, NYU loves the essays. Pay some serious attention to them. NYU is at the disadvantage in that it can't interview potential students, so you would think that they would substitute the essays for the interview.

So would you say that NYU and other selective colleges and universities look more favorably on having a good reason to transfer in your essay besides I want to attend INSERT SCHOOL because blah blah blah

yes, i do think they want to see that you have a good reason for wanting to be at this SPECIFIC institution. Tell them why it is the right place for YOU. That is what I am thinking, but honestly I feel like the blind leading the blind here.

Modern- my advice for writing about why you choose a certain academic program is to write about how this program will specifically help you accomplish your goals. i get the feeling NYU likes people to know what they want to do since they pretty much do not hold your hand throughout the 4 years. Especially, if you are applying to Gallatin you need to get really specific. Also, maybe write about how you can contribute to these programs. Just some ideas!

I am applying to Gallatin as a mid year transfer. I am in love with their program but to be honest don't like my chances. Maybe my essay could help me out, well heres hoping =]. I know they are more holistic anyway or so i understand. Anyone got info on how the Male/Female ration effects things? Its like 42/68 Lots of Girls at NYU and thats most likely good for for us guys.........

yes, i think being a male does help your chances in a VERY SMALL WAY. most college campuses have a higher precentage of females, so being in the minority as a male does not hurt. That is not whats going to get you in though. Thousands of people apply as transfers to NYU every semester.

Honestly, I do not know how "holistic" NYU really is. I think they really do care about the numbers more than they like to say. I went to one of NYU's nation wide tours in high school and the admissions staff said that SAT scores and high GPAs do really matter for NYU.

My friend got into NYU last year (she is a freshman at Gallatin now) and she had a 2250 on the SAT and probably almost a 4.0 with the IB diploma.

Your essay is probably the aspect of your app that you have the most control of if you don't like your numbers. I keep telling myself that too. Just make sure you write a killer essay! Good luck to you!

I talked ato an admissions officer who said that being male increase your chances by around 15% for every school but Stern. Not a big factor you are right but in the end every thing could be a tip. good luck dude and even if I dont get in theres always Tulane and GW

Being a male actually helps???!! That is quite a percentage that I didn't expect. I was thinking like 1% or something.

While I do not know if it is true that is what I was told but of course I can not speak of admissions practices I really am unfamiliar with certainty but I direct your attention to the following:

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/03/23/opinion/23britz.html

http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpag...C1A96E9582 60

To be honest it may play no role in admissions but I was not trying to exaggerate and I apoligize if it seemed that way...but i was told what I said before

Honestly, I think it may be a real possibility... but I am not sure how much of a curve that will give overall. Nevertheless it is interesting to realize that this is going on in the first place.
